CONCORD -- Natalie Romeo looked exhausted as she walked toward her bench after the buzzer sounded on Carondelet's 85-70 victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday.

But it was Romeo who, no doubt, exhausted the Fightin' Irish in the first round of the CIF Open Division Northern regional playoffs at De La Salle.

Romeo scored a game-high 28 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, as the No. 2 seed Cougars (28-3) advance to the NorCal semifinals against No. 6 Miramonte on Tuesday.

"It's going to be really interesting because we play similar," said Romeo about Tuesday's matchup.

On Friday, No. 7 Sacred Heart Cathedral (21-8) had a hard time containing Romeo. She scored at least four points in every quarter, including 18 in the second half.

A key 5-0 run in the second quarter by the Cougars (28-3) gave them the lead to stay. Marcella Hughes broke a 20-20 tie with a 3-point play, and Christina Chenault contributed a basket after that for a 25-20 advantage. The Cougars pushed the lead to double-digits in the fourth quarter.

Carondelet's bench was a key factor, accounting for 24 points, including 15 by junior Kim Savio.

"She was an animal on the boards," Carondelet coach Margaret Gartner said.

Makenzie Cast also had 15 points for Carondelet. Gabrielle Vigil paced Sacred Heart Cathedral with 21 points, including five 3-pointers.
