CONCORD -- Clayton Valley Charter High's Kayla Taylor was practically unstoppable in the second quarter of her team's CIF Division II Northern regional quarterfinal game Saturday against Lynbrook-San Jose, scoring 15 of her team-high 22 points in the period.

But it was a basket in the fourth quarter by the 5-foot-10 senior that may have been her most important of the game. Her layup with just over two minutes remaining was part of a 7-0 run that led to the host Eagles' 52-45 victory.

"That girl has shown so much heart this year," Clayton Valley Charter coach Paul Kommer said. "Her ability to push through fatigue is significant."

Teammate Hailey Pascoe added 20 points for the No. 4 seeded Eagles (24-7), who advanced to the NorCal semifinals for the first time in school history. Clayton Valley Charter will play Tuesday at top-seeded Archbishop Mitty-San Jose, a 71-35 winner over Dublin.

"These kids are just special," said Kommer about his squad. "They have supported each other ... they are making the extra pass."

After falling behind by double-digits at one point of the third quarter, visiting No. 5 Lynbrook (20-9) slowly closed the game and got within one point at 42-41 with 3:28 to play. But a free throw by Morgan Giacobazzi and the layup by Taylor started the 7-0 run, and Lynbrook didn't get closer than seven points after the run.

"We didn't play very well in the first half as far as taking care of the ball," Lynbrook coach Cynthia Ting said. "They are a very good team. I thought our defense worked pretty well. It came down to the fact they hit big shots."

Lynbrook was paced by a double-double from Sara Dyslin. The senior center scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

In the second quarter, Taylor sank six field goals and was 3 for 3 from the free-throw line.

"We started pushing the ball more and getting layups," said Taylor about her team in the second quarter. "We settled down our offense."

Clayton Valley Charter trailed 11-6 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored Lynbrook 23-10 in the second quarter.

Pascoe gave Clayton Valley Charter a 42-34 lead when she banked in a shot beyond halfcourt as the third-quarter buzzer sounded.
