It's only fitting that the two top teams in the Mercury News baseball rankings will meet in a regular-season finale Friday with so much on the line.
Mitty needed to beat Valley Christian on Tuesday to guarantee that its visit to St. Francis on Friday would mean more than bragging rights.
The Monarchs did and then almost got an unexpected surprise. St. Francis needed 12 innings Tuesday to win 4-2 at Archbishop Riordan, which has only two West Catholic Athletic League victories and is tied for last in the standings.
St. Francis' victory enabled the Lancers to maintain a one-game edge over Mitty heading into their WCAL showdown Friday at St. Francis.
If St. Francis wins, it claims the WCAL season title outright. If Mitty wins, it will be the round-robin champion by virtue of its head-to-head sweep of St. Francis. Mitty edged the Lancers 2-1 in 11 innings on April 4. In that one, St. Francis ace John Gavin (0.33 ERA on the season) allowed one run in nine innings.
