San Ramon Valley sweeps swim titles San Ramon Valley High captured the boys and girls titles at the East Bay Athletic League swimming championships on May 10 at Robert Livermore Community Center. In the girls competition, senior Heidi Poppe won the 100-yard breaststroke in a meet record time of 1:00.51 for the Wolves, who also got individual wins from sophomores Gianna Garcia (100 butterfly), Christina Chong (200 IM) and Claire Therien (500 freestyle). On the boys side, Hank Poppe also set a new league record with his time of 56.34 in the 100 breaststroke. Granada's Maxime Rooney won the boys 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, which edged Monte Vista for second place in the team standings. The sophomore also competed on the Matadors' 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams that set new meet records. Another meet record came from Amador Valley's Kevin McLaughlin in the boys 200 individual medley (1:52.00),
Close finish in store for EBAL baseball The race for the EBAL title in baseball could not be much closer going into the final week of the regular season, as California, De La Salle and San Ramon Valley were all tied for first place with 8-4 records, and Amador Valley was a game back at 7-5. On May 9, San Ramon Valley beat De La Salle 6-2 and California beat Granada 7-2 to create the logjam at the top. This week, California plays at De La Salle on May 15. A day later, San Ramon Valley plays at rival Monte Vista and Amador Valley hosts Foothill.

Foothill No. 2 seed in NCS playoffs The Foothill boys volleyball team finished the regular season on a five-match win streak and entered this week's NCS Division I playoffs as the No. 2 seed behind Deer Valley. Foothill, which received a first round bye, will play the winner of the first round match between No. 10 San Leandro and No. 7 Amador Valley. Other Tri-Valley teams in the Division I playoffs are Dougherty Valley at No 5 and Granada at No. 6. Livermore was the No. 8 seed in Division II. The first round began May 14, after this newspaper went to press, with the second round scheduled to start either May 16 or 17.

Heidi Poppe, San Ramon Valley girls swimming -- The Stanford-bound senior won the 100-yard breaststroke in a meet record time of 1:00.51 at the EBAL Championships. Mayson Xue, Dougherty Valley boys tennis -- Xue finished a dominant run in the NCS Division I boys tennis tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Terra Linda's Jerod Mah in the singles final on May 10 at Santa Rosa High.
