PLEASANTON -- Foothill High senior Cory Frederickson was a big hitter and a rally killer in a historic boys volleyball win Wednesday night.

Frederickson had 24 kills and nine aces as the Falcons swept visiting James Logan 25-12, 25-16, 25-23 in the North Coast Section Division I semifinals.

When Logan surged to tie it 20-20 in the third game on back-to-back blocks by captain Ryan Nicanor, Frederickson abruptly ended the Colts' rally with a kill and back-to-back aces. He ultimately ended the match with another thunderous kill that may have just nicked the line.

"I felt really good," Frederickson said. "I'm just really excited to get to the NCS finals. We were really pumped for this one. We've played this team a few times, and every time it's been a good game. They're a great team."

Foothill, the No. 2 seed, will play No. 1 Deer Valley in the championship match on Friday. Deer Valley, the defending Division I champions, beat De La Salle 25-17, 25-23, 27-25 in the other semifinal.

The Falcons (31-5) are guaranteed a berth in the NorCal Division I playoffs for the first time. They've won four NCS titles, all before the NorCal playoffs began in 2013.

"It was a big win for us. We were very ready for it," Foothill coach Dusty Collins said.

The Falcons' Erik Thornally had 11 kills, and setter Jason Yeo played a big part in the big hitters' success with 36 assists.

The Colts, who advanced to the NCS quarterfinals the two previous years, struggled to gain any momentum.

Collins said they expected a typically strong defensive effort from the Colts.

"We dictated points early on," Collins said of the difference in the outcome. "We had some great transition points where we were able to dig them and get our two guys the ball a lot, Cory and Erik."

Logan's Alex Loi had six kills and Nicanor had five kills.
