RICHMOND -- A former Richmond youth sports coach has pleaded not guilty to charges that he molested three girls.

Barron Edwards, a 51-year-old San Lorenzo resident, entered the plea Friday in a Richmond courtroom, prosecutor Melissa Smith said.

Edwards is charged with 39 felony sex crimes, including rape, aggravated sexual assault on a child under age 14, and child molestation, for alleged acts on girls in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

Edwards coached football at Kennedy High School in Richmond, basketball at De Anza High School Richmond, and worked for the Boys & Girls Club in the East Bay.

He remains in jail in lieu of $34.15 million bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 27.
