Livermore resident Robert Daily III, 26, has been charged with murder and one count of child abuse causing death after his 6-month old son died from head injuries on Aug. 1.

LIVERMORE -- A Livermore man was taken into custody Thursday after his 6-month-old baby died from head injuries that were caused by shaking, police said Friday.

Robert Daily III, 26, was charged in the Aug. 1 death of his 6-month-old son, an Alameda County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

Livermore police caught up with 26-year-old Robert Daily III in the 2100 block of Paseo Laguna Seco around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Alameda County Sheriff's Office spokesman J.D. Nelson said. Daily initially tried to evade arresting deputies who spotted him hiding in his car but ultimately surrendered after a brief chase, Nelson said.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged Daily with murder and one count of child abuse causing death, Nelson said.

The baby, whose name was not released, was rushed to the ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton on July 29 after he was found unresponsive in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Avenue in unincorporated Livermore, Nelson said. Doctors determined that the baby had severe internal head injuries, and he was taken to the pediatric intensive care unit at UC San Francisco Medical Center, where doctors determined he had suffered "nonaccidental head trauma," Nelson said.

Doctors also told investigators the baby had several broken ribs, a broken femur and issues with one of his retinas. The child died on Aug. 1.

Daily was taken to Santa Rita Jail where is being held without bail, Nelson said. Jail records show Daily had previously been arrested on drug charges.
