OAKLAND -- A 39-year-old woman fatally shot Saturday night while in a car with her boyfriend and 5-year-old son was involved in a dispute over property, authorities said Friday in announcing that charges have been filed against the suspected gunman.
Authorities said Rasheed Strane, 23, of Oakland, was charged with murder and attempted murder in the killing of Rebecca Viera and the wounding of her 23-year-old boyfriend. Viera's son was not injured.
The three were on their way to fast-food restaurant when shots were fired. Police said Strane has denied involvement in the shooting.
Officer Eric Milina said police believe Strane and Viera knew each other and differed over property belonging to her. He did not disclose the property or say where it was located.
Viera, her son and her boyfriend stopped 72nd and Lacey avenues while en route to the restaurant to meet with Strane, who lives in the area. Police said Strane began shooting into the car, hitting Viera and wounding the boyfriend in the shoulder. The boyfriend was able to drive to the 7200 block of MacArthur Boulevard, where he crashed into a pole and fence.
Milina said witnesses identified Strane as the gunman, and he was arrested early Wednesday morning in another part of East Oakland.
Strane has two prior felony convictions -- one in 2009 from grand theft from a person, and another in February 2008 for vehicle theft.
