ANTIOCH -- A robbery suspect shot and killed at a jewelry store Friday has been identified as 20-year-old David Carter of Antioch, according to the county coroner's office.

Police said the owner of Hardy Nix Jewelry store shot and killed Carter at about 4:30 p.m. Friday. Carter and another man were attempting to rob the store located at 3600 Delta Fair Boulevard, according to police.

A female customer caught in a gunbattle between one of the robbers and the store owner was also shot and later taken to a hospital with a non-life threatening wound, police said.

A second suspect in the armed robbery ran out of the store and was not apprehended despite an extensive search. Police have not released any description of the second suspect.

The shooting is considered a homicide under a law stating that anyone involved in a robbery that ends in a fatal outcome can be charged with murder.

Opened in 1947, Hardy Nix Jewelry carries traditional jewelry as well as wedding items, collectibles and religious items.
