REDWOOD CITY -- A Redwood City man, who was killed during a fight outside a beauty salon Monday, was identified as 46-year-old Michael Anthony Gonzales.

The suspect in Gonzales' killing, 53-year-old Paul Ahern, was arrested about 8:15 p.m. Monday after authorities found him standing next to the victim's motionless body in the 3100 block of Middlefield Road. Deputies attempted to perform CPR on Gonzales, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy is underway to determine the man's cause of death, San Mateo County coroner Robert Foucrault said. It's not known how he was killed, but sheriff's spokeswoman Rebecca Rosenblatt said there were no weapons used -- only force.

The men were reportedly drinking together in the hours leading up to the altercation, and investigators are working to determine what the two may have been fighting about, Rosenblatt said. Investigators are interviewing a number of witnesses who were present at the scene and are reviewing surveillance footage from businesses in the area.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to contact San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Detective Irfan Zaidi at 650-363-4192 or via email at izaidi@smcgov.org, or on the Anonymous Tip Line at 800-547-2700. Ahern remains in custody without bail at the San Mateo County Jail.
