Mats topple Alameda

  • Dominic Paoletti found a variety of ways to score as the Miramonte High football team defeated Alameda 44-14 on Sept. 20. Paoletti scored on a 55-yard punt return, a 5-yard run and a 32-yard reception to help the Matadors build a 35-0 lead at halftime. Will Fuller caught five passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

    Broncos win DVAL opener

  • The Northgate High girls volleyball team needed five games before finally putting away College Park 25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 15-25, 15-10 in its Diablo Valley Athletic League opener. Renee Lawrence had 16 kills while Samantha Steiner contributed 40 assists. The Broncos are defending DVAL champions.

    Minutemen get win over Bethel

  • Mitchell Daniels propelled the Concord High football team to its first on-the-field win of the season, a 36-33 victory over Bethel-Vallejo on Sept. 20. Daniels, a junior quarterback, completed 35 of 50 passes for 445 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. A late Bethel turnover allowed Daniels to orchestrate the game-winning drive, capped by Devon Brown's two-yard touchdown run with a minute left.

    Bulldogs falter after quick start

  • The Alhambra High football team got off to a strong start, but faded after that in a 42-21 loss to visiting Maria Carrillo-Santa Rosa on Sept. 20. Christopher Young and Zack Keever scored first-quarter touchdowns for the Bulldogs as they took a 15-7 lead, but Maria Carrillo stormed back to score 27 straight points and drop Alhambra to 1-2-1 on the season.

  • Campolindo at Acalanes, football, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. -- A pair of 4-0 teams will face off in the opening weekend of Diablo Foothill Athletic League play.

  • Las Lomas at Alhambra, football, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. -- Both teams will be looking to gain some momentum after dropping their final nonleague contest.

  • San Ramon Valley at De La Salle, football, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. -- The Wolves have a strong offense, but will their defense be able to stop a De La Salle team that's hitting its stride?

  • Stanford Invitational, cross country, Sept. 28, noon -- Elite runners will head to Palo Alto for this prestigious meet.

  • Rachel Lewin, Campolindo girls water polo -- Lewin scored five goals and had one assist in the Cougars' 16-8 nonleague win over Drake-San Anselmo on Sept. 18.

  • Phillip Rei, Campolindo football -- In the Cougars' impressive 42-27 victory over El Cerrito, the senior receiver caught seven passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns.

  • Jordan Bomba, Las Lomas girls volleyball -- Bomba had nine kills and 15 service points to help the Knights defeat Granada in four games on Sept. 19.

  • Eric Haynes, Northgate football -- The senior rushed for 127 yards on 29 carries in the Broncos' 31-17 win over Las Lomas on Sept. 20. Haynes scored three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 4:41 left.

  • Blair Hurlock, De La Salle cross country -- The senior was the top finisher at the De La Salle/Carondelet Invitational on Sept. 20, leading the Spartans to a team win at the event. Hurlock clocked a time of 13:56 on the rainy 2.95-mile Newhall Park course.

  • Riley Shaw, Carondelet girls water polo -- In a defensive struggle against Foothill, Shaw was the difference-maker. She stopped 22 shots to help the Cougars win the EBAL match 3-2 on Sept. 19.
