Dons, Matadors advance

  • All three Lamorinda football teams are still alive after the opening round of the North Coast Section playoffs. Miramonte and Acalanes won in routs while Campolindo, the No. 2 seed in Division III, had a bye. Ray Clark scored four touchdowns and rushed for 104 yards in Miramonte's 54-25 win over Tennyson in the Division II playoffs on Nov. 16. Acalanes, playing in Division III, defeated Sonoma Valley 49-10 as Brett Merrill scored three touchdowns and also contributed an interception and a forced fumble.

    Vikings reach .500, bowl game with win

  • The Diablo Valley College football team overcame an early 12-0 deficit to beat Feather River 38-19 and even its record at 5-5 overall. The Vikings were led by De La Salle graduate Joe Te'o, who rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns. QB Niko Fortino passed for 140 yards and a TD, but the defense also shined. DVC picked off Feather River quarterbacks five times, twice by Derrick Johnson. DVC will play in the Bay Bowl against Laney on Nov. 23 at noon in Oakland.

    Eagles coast in NCS playoff opener

  • The Clayton Valley Charter High football team made quick work of San Lorenzo, winning its NCS Division II opener 62-7 on Nov. 15. Xavier Crawford returned the opening kickoff for a score, and Miles Harrison rushed for 119 yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries. Clayton Valley, the defending champion in Division II, will host No. 7 Las Lomas in a Nov. 22 quarterfinal game.

  • Acalanes at Campolindo, NCS football, Nov. 22, 7 p.m. -- It's a Diablo Foothill Athletic League rematch in the NCS Division III quarterfinals as the No. 2 seeded Cougars host the No. 7 Dons. Campolindo had a first round bye while Acalanes crushed Sonoma Valley 49-10.

  • Granada at De La Salle, NCS football, Nov. 22, 7 p.m. -- The Spartans begin their hunt for a 22nd consecutive North Coast Section title with a quarterfinal matchup against the No. 8 Matadors.

  • NCS championships, cross country, Nov. 23, 8:30 a.m. -- Hayward High serves as the course for the section championship for another year. Action begins with the Division I girls race at 8:30 a.m. and wraps up with the Division V boys at 1:25 p.m.

    Stars of the week

  • Dylan Fara, Campolindo boys water polo -- The senior scored the game-winning goal with 26 seconds left as the Cougars earned their first NCS championship. Fara scored four goals total in the 11-10 win over Miramonte in the Division I final Nov. 16.

  • Annika Jensen and Natalie Seidemann, Campolindo girls water polo -- The senior stars combined for 13 goals in the Cougars' 19-6 win over Miramonte in the NCS Division II title game on Nov. 16.

  • Brett Merrill, Acalanes football -- Merrill made an impact on offense and defense in the Dons' 49-10 win over Sonoma Valley in the first round of the NCS Division III playoffs. He caught six passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns while forcing a fumble and intercepting a pass on defense.

  • Henry Brunner, Las Lomas football -- Brunner blocked a 20-yard field goal attempt in overtime, which helped Las Lomas rally for a 29-23 win over Washington in its NCS Division II playoff opener Nov. 16.

  • Rachael Haggen, Carondelet girls volleyball -- Haggen delivered 14 kills in the Cougars' four-game win over Northgate in the NCS Division II quarterfinals on Nov. 16.

  • Eric Haynes, Northgate football -- Haynes rushed for 263 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Broncos beat College Park 41-29 in the first round of the NCS Division II playoffs on Nov. 15.
