Mats improve to 6-0

  • The Miramonte High girls basketball team heads to this week's Nike TOC with some momentum after beating Clayton Valley Charter 76-43 in the final round of its own Mats Tip-Off Classic on Dec. 14. Sabrina Ionescu led three Mats in double figures with 19 points. Miramonte leaves for the Nike TOC in Arizona with a 6-0 record.

    Vikings win Solano Showdown

  • The Diablo Valley College women's basketball team continued its strong start to the season by winning the Solano Showdown on Dec. 15. Dericka Ware scored 22 points with three assists and three steals to lead the Vikings past Consumnes River College 72-61 in the title game. Sabrea Coleman added 16 points.

    Broncos fall in tournament final

  • The Northgate High girls basketball team reached the championship game of its own tournament, the Walnut Creek Holiday Classic, but lost to Monte Vista 55-41 on Dec. 13. Talia and Danielle Arauzo combined for 21 points, but the game got away from the Broncos early and they trailed 21-7 after the first quarter. It was Northgate's first loss of the season.

    Minutemen suffer first loss

  • The Concord High boys basketball team took second place at the Stonebarger Tournament, falling to host Liberty 61-48 in the Dec. 14 championship game. It was the first loss of the season for the Minutemen. Daniel Solis and Jamil Lea each scored 14 points in the defeat.

  • De La Salle vs. St. John Bosco-Bellflower, football, Dec. 21, 8 p.m. -- The Spartans will play for a fifth consecutive Open Division state championship against an undefeated Braves team.

  • Nike TOC, girls basketball, Dec. 20-21, times TBA -- Miramonte's girls basketball team will play in the premier division of the prestigious tournament in Arizona.

  • Acalanes at Campolindo, girls soccer, Dec. 20, 6:15 p.m. -- The Lamorinda rivals meet in a DFAL game before a short break for the holidays.

  • De La Salle Showcase, boys soccer, Dec. 20-21, 7 p.m. -- The Spartans take on Servite-Anaheim and Cathedral-Los Angeles in their own showcase event.

    Stars of the week

  • Preston Kilwien, Campolindo boys soccer -- Kilwien helped the Cougars stay unbeaten by scoring two first-half goals in a 3-0 DFAL victory over Alhambra on Dec. 13.

  • David Ortega, De La Salle football -- The senior linebacker came down with two interceptions in the Spartans' 45-17 win over Folsom in the CIF Northern Region final on Dec. 14. Ortega has picked off three balls in De La Salle's last two games.

  • Joe DeMers and Jeffrey Mitchell, College Park boys basketball -- Also standouts on the baseball diamond, DeMers and Mitchell scored 19 points each to lead the Falcons past Alhambra 58-44 in the consolation championship of the Antelope Holiday Classic on Dec. 14.

  • Ashley Ewing, Campolindo girls basketball -- Ewing lit up the scoreboard with 34 points to lead the Cougars to a 70-28 win over Acalanes in the semifinals of the Walnut Creek Holiday Classic on Dec. 13.

  • Matt Nerland, Las Lomas boys basketball -- Nerland scored 20 points in a 74-58 win over Dublin in the third place game of the Amador Basketball Classic on Dec. 14 and earned all-tournament honors.

  • Hailey Pascoe, Clayton Valley Charter girls basketball -- Pascoe scored 20 points in a 60-50 win over Dublin in the second round of the Mats Tip-Off Classic on Dec. 13.

  • Dericka Ware, Diablo Valley College women's basketball -- Ware, who is averaging 24.4 points, scored 22 to help the Vikings capture the Solano Showdown tournament championship on Dec. 15.
