Solid week for Cougars

  • The Campolindo boys basketball team has an early lead in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League thanks to wins over Dougherty Valley and Acalanes during the opening week of league play. The Cougars held off an up-and-coming Dougherty Valley squad 70-59 in their opener behind 19 points from Chris Hansen. He also had a team-high 14 points in a 72-49 win over Acalanes.

    Knights win Battle of the Creek

  • The Las Lomas and Northgate boys basketball teams met on Jan. 11 for the hardwood edition of the Battle of the Creek, and the Knights prevailed 62-42 in the nonleague game. Matt Nerland scored 21 points while Ben Wood pulled down 15 rebounds for Las Lomas, which also beat defending Diablo Foothill Athletic League champion Dublin 66-64 earlier in the week in its league opener.

    Warriors stay in DVAL lead

  • The Ygnacio Valley High boys soccer team remained unbeaten in Diablo Valley Athletic League play by defeating Clayton Valley Charter 2-1 and settling for a 0-0 draw with Mt. Diablo during the week of Jan. 6. Prior to the tie with the Red Devils, Ygnacio Valley was 7-0 this season against Northern California teams. Their only two losses came in a Southern California tournament in December.

    Bulldogs earn DFAL wins

  • The Alhambra High girls soccer team completed a strong week of Diablo Foothill Athletic League play, earning shutout wins over Dougherty Valley and Las Lomas. Lindsey Wells had the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Las Lomas while Julia Wilkins scored twice against Dougherty Valley in a 3-0 win. The Bulldogs vaulted into a tie for third in the league standings with the victories.

  • Alhambra at Acalanes, boys soccer, Jan. 17, 6:15 p.m. -- The two teams fighting Campolindo for the top spot in the DFAL will match up in Lafayette.

  • De La Salle at Monte Vista, boys basketball, Jan. 17, 7 p.m. -- The gym will be packed as the defending EBAL champion Spartans travel to a Mustangs team that was undefeated as of Jan. 13.

  • Literacy Classic All-Star game, football, Jan. 18, 7 p.m. -- The top high school seniors from the East Bay will take on the best from the South and West Bay at San Jose City College to raise money for a literacy program.

  • MLK Classic, boys basketball, Jan. 20, 10:30 a.m. -- De La Salle is hosting an all-day basketball showcase at Berkeley's Haas Pavilion on MLK Day. The Spartans play Long Beach Poly at 5:45 p.m. as part of an excellent lineup.

    Stars of the week

  • Drew Anderson, Miramonte boys basketball -- Anderson scored 21 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Matadors to a 69-63 comeback win over Dublin on Jan. 10. The senior also had 14 rebounds and two blocks.

  • Ashley Ewing, Campolindo girls basketball -- Ewing scored 19 points with eight rebounds, six assists and seven steals in the Cougars' 71-53 win over Acalanes on Jan. 11.

  • Jon Allen, Clayton Valley Charter boys basketball -- Allen's 25 points lifted the Eagles to a 77-65 win over Berean Christian on Jan. 10 and to a 2-0 record in the DVAL.

  • Jason Braden, Berean Christian boys basketball -- Braden's 18 points and late-game heroics led the Eagles past Lick-Wilmerdig of San Francisco 51-50 on Jan. 11. His bucket with 16 seconds left tied the game, then he made a game-winning free throw.

  • Makenzie Cast, Carondelet girls basketball -- The LMU-bound senior scored 22 points and hit five 3-pointers in a 79-51 win over South Bay rival Archbishop Mitty-San Jose on Jan. 11.

  • Jamil Lea, Concord boys basketball -- Lea had an all-around strong game with 12 points, nine assists and eight rebounds as the Minutemen beat Mt. Diablo 87-51 on Jan. 10 to open DVAL play with two straight wins.

  • Abisai Padilla, Northgate boys soccer -- Padilla scored three goals in two games, helping the Broncos beat Clayton Valley and Acalanes by 3-1 scores.

  • Lindsey Wells, Alhambra girls soccer -- The junior had the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Las Lomas on Jan. 10 and added a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over Dougherty Valley during a strong week for the Bulldogs.
