Spartans back on track

  • After a rough start to the season, the De La Salle High soccer team has rebounded. The Spartans recently won five straight, including four in a row in East Bay Athletic League play after starting league play 0-2. Joey Jones scored twice in a 2-0 win over Cal on Jan. 21 while Stephen Dougherty provided the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Livermore on Jan. 23.

    Vikings improve to 16-4

  • Northgate High graduate Connor Jean led the Diablo Valley College men's basketball team to a 62-52 win over Santa Rosa in Big 8 play on Jan. 24. The sophomore tallied 16 points as the Vikings improved to 16-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Jermaine Edmonds and Justin Yeargin added 14 points each.

    Broncos win two thrillers

  • The Northgate High boys basketball game continued its recent surge with a pair of one-point victories to improve to 4-1 in Diablo Valley Athletic League play. In a 46-45 win over Berean Christian on Jan. 24, Matt Trowbridge led the way with 18 points, but it was Taylor Mickle's buzzer-beater that earned the win.

    Ygnacio Valley on top

  • Ygnacio Valley's boys soccer team remains at the top of the DVAL standings. The Warriors improved to 12-2-1 overall and 6-0-1 in league play after a 5-0 victory over Concord on Jan. 24.

  • Las Lomas at Miramonte, girls soccer, Jan. 31, 6:15 p.m. -- The Matadors have been a roll in DFAL play recently, winning three straight heading into the week of Jan. 27.

  • Northgate at College Park, boys basketball, Jan. 31, 7 p.m. -- The first-place Falcons will try to cool off a red-hot Broncos squad in this important DVAL game.

  • Carondelet at Deer Valley, girls basketball, Feb. 1, 4 p.m. -- The Cougars will try to pick up a nonleague win over the top team from the Bay Valley Athletic League.

  • Campolindo at Miramonte, boys basketball, Feb. 1, 7:30 p.m. -- Two of the top teams in the DFAL get together with bragging rights and positioning in the league standings at stake.

    Stars of the week

  • Breanna Alford, Miramonte girls basketball -- Alford produced a double-double in back-to-back games for the Matadors as they beat Dougherty Valley 75-29 and Berkeley 78-62 on Jan. 24-25.

  • Jon Allen, Clayton Valley Charter boys basketball -- Allen's 27 points and nine rebounds helped the Eagles take down Mt. Diablo 83-63 on Jan. 24 and improve to 3-2 in DVAL play.

  • Vaughn Arterberry, Bentley boys basketball -- Arterberry's near triple-double (10 points, seven steals, seven assists) helped the Phoenix top Valley Christian 75-40 on Jan. 24 to stay unbeaten in BCL-East play.

  • Makenzie Cast, Carondelet girls basketball -- The senior guard averaged 17 points and three assists as the Cougars went 2-1 in a busy week with wins over San Ramon Valley and Livermore in EBAL play, and a loss to St. Mary's.

  • Stephen Dougherty, De La Salle boys soccer -- Dougherty's 26th minute goal was the difference in a 1-0 victory over Livermore on Jan. 23, which was part of a five-game winning streak for the Spartans.

  • Jenn Saelio, Las Lomas girls basketball -- Saelio's 26 points powered the Knights to a 67-64 overtime win over Acalanes on Jan. 24.

  • Logan Silva, College Park girls soccer -- Silva scored both goals in the Falcons' 2-0 victory over Clayton Valley Charter in a Jan. 21 DVAL game.
