Town Hall's 'Candida' opens May 24

The main stage at Town Hall Theatre will host a production of George Bernard Shaw's "Candida" May 4-June 13.

Directed by Molly Aaronson-Gelb, this is the story of a pastor shaken when a young poet catches the attention of his beautiful wife Candida. It is a funny, touching and poignant production on social mores.

"Candida" will have preview performances May 22 and 23, as well. remains funny, touching and poignant to this day.

Lafayette Art Galley is show's 'Location'

"Location, location, location" may be the rule of real estate, for the artists at the Lafayette Art Gallery, it also speaks to the gallery's new location at The Forge, built on Mt. Diablo Boulevard in 1946 by the noted metal artist Carl Jennings.

The Lafayette Art Gallery artists are celebrating with the new exhibit "Location," continues through May 3, featuring more than 100 works of original art by our local members.

Elementary, middle school art on exhibit

The annual Exhibition of Arts Ambassadors artwork is now open at the Orinda Library Gallery, an showcase featuring the artwork of more than 200 students from the Orinda elementary schools and Orinda Intermediate School.

The exhibition runs through April 30.

The Orinda Union School District Arts Ambassadors Exhibit and Reception has been held each spring at the library gallery, starting in 2007. Curated by the OUSD Visual Arts teachers, the exhibit highlights a collection of student art work that includes at least one piece from every OUSD art studio (grades 1-8).

The exhibit is co-sponsored by Educational Foundation of Orinda and the Orinda Arts Council.

Gallery hosts paintings by Kerima Swain

The Moraga Art Gallery announces a new show, "Illuminated by Nature," highlighting the beauty and wonder of the natural world through oil and acrylic paintings by resident artist Kerima Swain of Walnut Creek and watercolor paintings by guest artist Karen Kramer of Oakland.

The showwill run through May 31.

Valley's 'Fresh Color' show now open

"Fresh Color," a new collection of more than 300 new works of fine art, crafts and jewelry, opened March 29 at the Valley Art Gallery, 1661 Botelho Drive, Suite 110 (in Palm Court) in downtown Walnut Creek.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

'The Beat Goes On' with the Blackhawk Chorus

The 130 voices of the men and women of the Blackhawk Chorus will be presenting two performances of their Spring Show, "The Beat Goes On", a show that features hits that include "Sweet Caroline," "The Look of Love," "Feelin' Groovy" and other 60's-era songs.

Under the direction of Diane Gilfether, the Blackhawk Chorus is celebrating its 23rd year. It has performed at the Lincoln Center in New York City, the Vatican in Rome, and various European countries.

The first performance is Sunday, May 8 at 4 p.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church, 2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd, San Ramon. On May 21 the chorus will perform at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek, beginning at 8 p.m.

The two hours of great music will include numbers by Special Blend and Blackhawk Jazz, vocal groups made up of some of the great voices within the nationally recognized Blackhawk Chorus.

Bedford Gallery events on tap

The Bedford Gallery has a number of spring events coming up, including the following:

  • Spring Craft Fest, May 4, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Bedford will host local artists and crafters selling handmade jewelry, home goods, prints, ceramics, artisan food and more.

  • Open Call for Local Artists -- In honor of Walnut Creek's centennial this year, the Bedford will present "Walnut Creek Turns 100: Celebrating the City Through Art." The gallery is accepting submissions now through Sept. 5 from all members of our community.

  • Public Art Walking Tours, Every third Saturday of the month, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning April 19. The Bedford offers docent-led tours of Walnut Creek's public art collection.

    Civic Arts, Clay Arts Guild team for spring artists market

    The Civic Arts Education Spring Artists' Market will have two locations -- Shadelands Auditorium, 111 N. Wiget Lane, and Civic Park Studio E, corner of Civic and Broadway -- in Walnut Creek May 2-4, where gifts of art in many forms will be available.

    Both locations begin the sale with a fun reception on Friday, May 2 from 5 to 9 p.m, with live music, hors d'oeuvres and the opportunity to shop for one-of-a-kind gift creations by artists from Civic Arts Education and the Clay Arts Guild.

    The sale continues Saturday and Sunday. Shadelands Auditorium will feature all art media, including ceramics, glass art, paintings, photography, printmaking, jewelry, textiles and more. Hours on Saturday and Sunday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. At Civic Park Studio E, functional and decorative ceramic art including porcelain, raku, sculpture and more will be for sale. The studio will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Various artists will hold demonstrations throughout the sale. One of several demonstrations scheduled, Gail Morrison will hold a Suminagashi printmaking demo from 2 to 4 p.m. May 3, and potter Ellen Sachtschale will demonstrate soft slab pottery techniques at 11 a.m. that day -- both at the Shadelands location.

    Volunteer Information Day at Bedford Gallery

    Learn about the fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities at the Bedford Gallery at a Volunteer Information Day event from 10 a.m. until noon April 21 at the Bedford Gallery, in the Lesher Center for the Arts at 1601 Civic Dr. in Walnut Creek.

    Attendees can speak with current volunteers, meet gallery curator Carrie Lederer, enjoy coffee and pastries while browsing the current show "Sky: A National Juried Exhibition" and enter for a chance to win fabulous door prizes.

    The Bedford offers various volunteer opportunities, including welcoming visitors at the reception desk, hosting receptions and special events, producing fundraising events and offering field trips and other fun events for members. Volunteer Day admission is free and open to anyone 18 and over interested in becoming a docent, guild member or short-term volunteer or intern.
