Moraga, Orinda students named National Merit Scholarship winners

Four students from Moraga and Orinda have been named National Merit Scholarship winners and will receive financial awards renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study.

Moraga resident Jennifer J. Li has won a National Merit Bayer Scholarship. The Miramonte High School student plans to study biological engineering. Julia Shen, also of Moraga, won a National Merit Nelson F. Peterson Scholarship award. Shen also attends Miramonte High School and plans to study medicine.

Orinda resident and Oakland College Preparatory School student Talbot P. Jacobs won a National Merit Chevron Corporation Scholarship. Jacobs plans to study economics.

Finally, Miramonte High School student and Orinda resident Margot S. Mai has been named the recipient of a National Merit Jerry J. Jenkins Memorial Scholarship. She plans to study medicine.

Approximately 1,000 high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by approximately 200 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations.

Project LPIE award reception and open house slated for May

An award reception and open house for Acalanes High School students participating in project-based learning will be held in May.

As part of Project LPIE, sponsored by Lafayette Partners in Education and Acalanes High School, students compete in any of 13 categories showcasing their skills in and out of the curriculum. Student submissions include projects in acting, applied design, community service, creative writing, vocal music and photography. Judging is done by professional business leaders.

All projects will be displayed and winners recognized at the award reception beginning at 4 p.m. May 16. An open house will be held May 17 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. The events will be held at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center.
