Amid state's budget woes, rail plan insane
What kind of idiots are the legislators and the governor?
We have the governor closing parks, proposing summary executions for stray animals and forecasts of doom due to a budget shortfall. Yet they have the gall to vote to issue $9.9 billion in bonds for the governor's "I want to beat my Daddy's legacy" plan, the horribly flawed high-speed rail project. To pay the bonds back, it will cost the general fund about $580 million dollars a year for 30 years at 5 percent interest. It is scandalous. Every legislator who voted for it needs to be voted out of office this fall and the governor in two years. And, as for me, I will not vote for the tax increase to give them more money to waste.
Corporate welfare dwarfs social welfare
I get so sick of seeing the vicious attacks on ordinary people made by people outraged that any of our tax dollars go back to the people.
What's wrong with that? I don't understand why they're in a lather over that. It seems to me that we spend way too much money on the military industrial complex, butting into the affairs of other countries on behalf of corporate interests, bailing out too many corporations and giving too many of the obscenely wealthy a break when the rest of us are struggling to make ends meet.
Tire repairs must stick to standards
In the letter "City mourns death of a decent man," (July 12) a reader wrote about a tire failure due to a nail puncture that two different Big O Tires stores refused to repair. He later took the tire to another store and had it repaired without difficulty.
Big O Tires adheres to RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) standards for all tire repairs. There is much more to repairing a tire than keeping the air inside. The tire must be repaired properly to prevent tire failure in the future. Refer to this website for details: http://www.rma.org. All tire manufacturers recognize RMA tire procedures as the only way to safely repair a tire.
Recently, a Ford dealership lost a $14.4 million dollar judgment for failing to properly repair a tire resulting in two fatalities. This is only the latest of many, lawsuits and needless death and injury caused by improper tire repair procedures. Unfortunately, this is not the first time I have heard of another tire retailer repairing a tire outside of RMA standards.
The tire repair standard is black-and-white -- there is no gray area or wiggle room. Tires outside the standard should be removed from service for your safety. An unexpected tire purchase is never convenient, but safety should always come first.

Letter's facts, logic left much to be desired
A recent letter stating that "Republicans betraying duty to uphold laws" demonstrates the writer's lack of memory and understanding of the Constitution.
As the leader of the government's executive branch, President Obama swore to uphold the laws. Whether you agree or disagree with the policy, it is he who failed to do so by refusing to enforce the immigration laws that are on the books and Constitutional.
I doubt the letter-writer has read the entire 983-page document, but Obamacare has provisions that allow state governments certain options. Republicans are urging the states to exercise those options according to what is allowed under the law.
Finally, the judicial branch of the government does not make laws, they only interpret the laws or determine Constitutionality. The legislative branch of the government has the power to make new laws, repeal old laws and even begin the process of amending the Constitution.
Justice Roberts stated that it was not the court's position to alter or change laws, but to interpret them. He went on to basically say that if the public does not like the law, they can take steps to change it at the next election. How is supporting the repeal of Obamacare disrespectful to the judicial branch?
The letter-writer needs to take a course on the Constitution again.

Sanitation workers are doing great job
I really feel the need to say something positive here; I wish to compliment our Livermore sanitation drivers.
I see these drivers weekly in my neighborhood, and they are always very pleasant and helpful. We wave at each other and on occasion have spoken some friendly words. When you think about it, this is not a glamorous job, but it is one that we cannot live without. It also needs mentioning that when you call the main number you actually get a knowledgeable and helpful human being on the phone -- I love it!
In a world that seems to be getting very impersonal and going by so quickly and people can be so quick to complain, I felt it necessary to just simply say, "thank you."
Thank you, gentlemen and ladies for doing a great job. It is most appreciated, and your level of polite professionalism has not gone unnoticed.
U.S. senators vs. 'kiss-up Democrats'
Sen. Feinstein, are you an American senator or a kiss-up Democrat? It appears that Harry Reid gets daily White House orders for the kiss-up Democrats to follow.
American senators say there are three equal branches of government and write their own legislation to improve the lives of all Americans. Kiss-up Democrats say what the people want that day even though it's not what they stated previously. An American senator has and follows deep-held principles respected by all Americans.
A kiss-up Democrat proclaims favorably for offshore oil drilling and use of all available sources for energy production but blocks expansion of nuclear power by shutting down Yucca Mountain storage and stopping reprocessing of spent fuel. An American senator wants and works to achieve full employment by approving the Keystone pipeline and multiple nuclear plants with the extensive infrastructure to support these endeavors.
A kiss-up Democrat votes for measures that increase all taxes especially on rich people and successful small businesses. An American senator votes for equitable taxes when justified and greatly favors lowering taxes to spur job growth.
A kiss-up Democrat wants central or federal government control of schools including what to teach and when. An American senator recognizes local needs and interests and teacher proficiency are best understood by local school boards and vests authority therein.
So, Sen. Feinstein, are you an American senator or a kiss-up Democrat?
