Don't like Obamacare? Offer up an alternative

I am getting really tired of hearing politicians and others call for the repeal of Obamacare -- without proposing any alternatives.

Is there anyone out there who truly does not believe our health care "nonsystem" is a complete mess and that solutions are needed?

We are the only prosperous country in the world where large percentages of our citizens cannot get insurance, are subject to pre-existing condition exclusions and lifetime maximums, and do not have access to preventive care and, as a result, become seriously ill, often driving them into bankruptcy. It is a national disgrace.

Obamacare is not perfect, but it does begin to address many of these problems and will vastly improve the health and quality of life of many Americans.

It is irresponsible to just be against something and not offer up any solutions.

So, to all you Obamacare repealers, I say it's time to either step up to the plate or sit down.

Dishonest rant against Obama

Mark Marcotte's letter, "The tea party is only hope against Obama," exhibited his partisan sarcasm, prevarication and exaggeration. But substance was conspicuously absent.

Marcotte began his tirade by accusing President Barack Obama of "pretending he's not accountable for our nation's problems." However, if he actually listened to Obama speak, he'd know quite the contrary is true.

Marcotte referred to those who voted for Obama as "ignorant." My disagreements with President George W. Bush were numerous, but I'd never arrogantly denigrate his supporters' intelligence and integrity.

Marcotte attributes numerous "scandals" to Obama, but none he mentioned has been investigated to a conclusion. His eagerness to smear Obama is clumsily premature.

He asserted Obama's economic plan consisted of "raising taxes and increasing our debt ceiling." The first is false; Speaker John Boehner would never allow a tax increase to pass the House. And I wonder if Marcotte ever objected when the debt ceiling was raised during Bush's tenure.

Marcotte ended his dishonest rant by stigmatizing Obama as a "skinny socialist." He should return to school, take a political-science course, and learn the definition of "socialism" by studying this time!

Israel stands out as marvel of innovation

Israel is surrounded by neighbors who relentlessly threaten her very existence, and they are assisted by people who disseminate propaganda to help in that pursuit.

These neighbors have created failed states, not just by standards of the modern world, but by standards of democracy and individual liberty. In contrast, Israel stands as the only real democracy in the Middle East.

While Israel's neighbors hide their own failures by focusing on war and hatred, Israel has become a marvel of innovation.

Witness Israel's achievements:

  • Electronics that help people walk who cannot walk by themselves.

  • A pill that dissolves fibroids or other targets without involving invasive surgery.

  • The early development of wireless communication.

  • The founding of many high-tech companies by high-tech graduates.

  • The discovery of two major gas fields in Israel, resulting in programs specializing in natural gas and petroleum.

  • The highest number of Nobel Prizes in proportion to their surrounding population.

Israel makes the world a better place.

Bicyclists, like drivers, must follow the laws

A bicyclist wrote to Times columnist Gary Richards about a ticket he got for running a stop sign.

Aren't cyclists supposed to follow the same laws as autos, stopping at red traffic lights and stop signs, riding on the right side of the road, not talking/texting on a cell phone and not passing on the right side of a two-lane road?

A car approaches a stop sign, stops and turns right. Here comes "stupid," who tries to pass on the right, makes a quick maneuver to miss the car, hits the curb, and then hits the stop sign. There has to be a better way to stop at a stop sign.

I have come to a conclusion that the IQs of some humans drop drastically when they get on a bicycle.
