'Hey, fellas, Rome is that-a-way!'
Those attending last week's Livermore City Council meeting were scratching their heads when contractor Doug Fernandez approached the lectern during the public comment period.
Fernandez addressed the council accompanied by two Roman soldiers holding spears, a wise man in a floor-length robe, and children dressed as Mary and Joseph.
It wasn't a political statement; Fernandez was there to invite council members to his "Living Bethlehem" nativity show, that runs Dec. 13-17 at 222 Church St.
The actors filed out, but not without a parting "Hail Caesar!" from the soldiers, directed at Mayor John Marchand and the rest of the council.

Pleasanton's problems, such as they are, seem rather minor in comparison to the worries facing a group of five South Vietnamese administrative heads who came to Pleasanton to see firsthand how this community is handling its growth.
The five are all deputy province chiefs and deputy mayors from areas around Saigon. Pleasanton was only the second stop on a five-week tour that will take the dignitaries to many of the 50 states.
City officials, including City Manager Bill Edgar and other department heads, welcomed the group and went on a bus tour of the city that included, Kaiser Center, Muirwood Park, the McCloud Pumping Station and the fairgrounds.
"It is different now" said LeVan Them, the only South Vietnamese who spoke English, "because of the war, all the people have crowded into the cities because they fear sabotage and terrorism."
They all, however, are looking forward to the war's end and even now are beginning to start planning for peacetime problems. Them admitted the Vietnamese administrative agencies won't be able to apply many of the things they will learn on the tour because there are no funds "but, we can imitate your organization and modify it to fit our country." he added.
