Foothill's Maund wins NorCal golf title

  • Foothill High's Ryan Maund shot a 4-under 68 at Diablo Grande Golf Course in Patterson on May 20 to earn medalist honors at the NCGA/CIF Northern California boys golf championships. Maund, a junior, eagled the 376-yard, par 4 eighth hole, birdied both the par 5 ninth and par 4 10th holes, and did not make any bogeys as he became the first East Bay golfer to win the event, which began in 2005. Maund advances to play in the state championships in Carmel on June 5 at Quail Lodge Golf Club.

    Amador Valley shines at Meet of Champions

  • Amador Valley standout Matt Esparza took first place in the discus and shot put at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions on May 24-25 at Cal's Edwards Stadium. Esparza will compete in the California Interscholastic Federation championships in Clovis next week. His winning discus throw was 169 feet, 10 inches. His shot put mark was 57-8. The Dons' Sam Peters qualified for state in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles. Amador Valley's boys 1,600 relay took first in the MOC finals.

    Mats' McCandless goes the distance

  • Granada freshman Megan McCandless qualified for the state track meet in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters by placing in third in both events at the NCS Meet of Champions on May 25. Granada senior Maryann Gong took first place in the 1,600.

    San Ramon Valley softball stuns Amador

  • The San Ramon Valley softball team upset No. 1 seed Amador Valley 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the NCS Division I playoffs. Junior The Wolves' Courtney Kezerian tossed a four-hitter with four strikeouts, and freshman Riley Salvo was 3 for 3. Francine Villalobos was 2 for 3 and Alexis Villalobos had two RBis for the No. 8 seeded Wolves.

    Vikings win thriller

  • The Valley Christian High baseball team topped Stuart Hall-San Francisco 3-2 in the NCS Division V quarterfinals on May 23. Evan Opperman was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Vikings, who improved to 18-7. Jared Dalrymple went the distance to improve to 10-3.

    Payne, Campiotti pace Granada

  • Three-sport standout Kyle Campiotti was 2 for 3 with three RBI, and Jacob Payne went six strong innings, helping No. 1 seeded Granada (24-1) beat Deer Valley 7-1 on May 23 in the quarterfinals of the NCS Division I baseball playoffs. Payne improved to 12-1 overall, striking out nine and allowing two hits over six innings. Ryan Flayler worked a scoreless seventh.

  • Daniel Slominski, Livermore baseball -- Slominski had a one-hitter through six innings in a 1-0 loss to College Park in the first round of the NCS Division II playoffs on May 23.

  • Michael Echavia, Amador Valley baseball -- The senior fired a two-hitter in the Dons' 4-0 win over Heritage on May 25 in the NCS Division I quarterfinals.

  • Samantha Whalen, Livermore softball -- She was 4 for 4 with four RBI in a 10-0 win over Rancho Cotate in the first round of the NCS Division II playoffs.

  • Courtney Kezerian, San Ramon Valley softball -- She fired a four-hitter to lead the Wolves to a stunning upset of EBAL co-champion Amador Valley in the NCS playoffs.
