LIVERMORE -- One person died and another was hospitalized when a car and a recycling truck slammed into each head-on near Livermore on Thursday night, the California Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened at 11 p.m. on Altamont Pass Road just east of Dyer Road when a Buick crossed into oncoming traffic and collided, killing its driver, CHP Officer John Bautista said. The identity of the Buick's driver had not been determined Friday morning, Bautista said.

The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old man from Antioch, was taken to Kaiser Medical Center in Antioch. The severity of his injures was not released, Bautista said.

Investigators are still trying to determined why the Buick suddenly drifted into the westbound lanes, but they do believe the Buick was going faster than the posted speed limit of 55 mph, Bautista said.

It is not known yet whether drugs or alcohol may have been involved, he said. Check back for updates.
