Falcons win marathon The College Park High boys volleyball team outlasted visiting San Ramon Valley to pick up a 25-27, 27-25, 25-15, 17-25, 15-13 win in a North Coast Section Division I quarterfinal on May 18. Nelson Fisher led the way for the Falcons with 43 assists, six digs and two kills. Bo Hunter also had 16 kills, seven blocks and nine digs in the win. No. 4 seed College Park advanced to play No. 1 De La Salle on May 23 but results were unavailable at press time.

Spartans take first The De La Salle High baseball team got a big performance from pitcher AJ Puckett and wrapped up the East Bay Athletic League title with a 5-2 win over host California on May 17. Puckett fanned nine in the complete-game win, and Austin Lonestar drove in two runs. The Spartans finished the regular season 17-7 overall and 10-4 in EBAL play. They earned the No. 1 seed in the NCS Division I playoffs.

Knights' Miller sets record Las Lomas High junior Jackson Miller broke the North Coast Section meet record in winning the 200-yard freestyle at the section championships at Concord Community Pool on May 19. Miller, who took fifth in the event last year, was more than three seconds quicker this year and beat defending champion and record holder Nick Silverthorn of Granada with a time of 1:36.85. The time was nearly a second quicker than the old record.

On deck Castro Valley/Heritage at De La Salle, baseball, May 26, 1 p.m. -- The No. 1-seeded Spartans earned a bye in the NCS Division I playoffs and will host either the Trojans or Patriots in the second round. NCS Meet of Champions, track and field, May 25-26, all day -- The section's top track and field athletes convene at UC Berkeley's Edwards Stadium with hopes of qualifying for the state meet. The top four finishers in each event will automatically move on.
Stars of the week Praise Adesida, Alhambra girls track and field -- Adesida won both the discus and shot put at the NCS Tri-Valley Championshps at Granada High on May 19. Adesida uncorked a throw of 41 feet, 3 inches in the shot put and 140 feet, nine inches in the discus to win both events easily. Joe DeMers, College Park baseball -- DeMers helped the Falcons clinch their first league title since 1994 by throwing a one-hitter in a 2-0 win over visiting Northgate on May 15. DeMers struck out eight in the win. Sven Campbell, Campolindo boys swimming -- The junior capped an outstanding postseason with three meet records at the NCS championships on May 19. He won the 100 freestyle (44.22) and 100 backstroke (48.16) in record time and also set the 50 freestyle standard with a 20.23 as the leadoff leg to the 200 freestyle relay. Chelsea Chenault and Madison White, Carondelet swimming -- Chenault and Whit each won two individual events and helped the Cougars win a relay at the NCS swimming championships in Concord on May 19. Chenault set a record in the 500-yard freestyle and also won the 200 freestyle, while White won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Jonathan De Los Reyes, Saint Mary's College golf -- Only a freshman, the De La Salle High grad made a birdie putt to win a playoff at the NCAA Southwestern Regional Championships in Norman, Okla. on May 19. By winning the playoff, De Los Reyes earned the final qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships on May 29. Jamie Fehrnstrom, Miramonte boys track and field -- The senior posted top times in both the 1600 meters and 800 meters at the NCS Tri-Valley Meet on May 19 to qualify for the NCS Meet of Champions. He ran the 1600 in 4:20.68 and the 3200 in 1:55.91. Logan Lisle, Berean Christian baseball -- Lisle went 3 for 6 with two runs as the Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to Concord and upset win over College Park during the week of May 14. Cimran Virdi, Las Lomas track and field -- A senior, Virdi broke the NCS Tri-Valley meet record with her vault of 12 feet, 5 inches on May 19. The old record was 12-1.
