  • At the Martinez Library, Story Time programs are free.

    Mother Goose Time: 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays through Nov. 6. For babies and toddlers, ages 0-5, it features songs, bounces, tickles and simple stories.

    Family Night Stories and Special Events: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays through Nov. 5 (no session Oct. 15). Kids can come in their pajamas to listen to a story and enjoy a special event.

    Meet Sam, Canine Ambassador: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 1. Preschoolers and kids participating in Family Night Stories will meet Sam, the Canine Ambassador. They will learn about how to be safe around strange dogs, how to choose a pet and how to take care of a special dog in their lives. There will be time for petting after the program.

    "Two among the Righteous Few: A story of courage in the Holocaust" 1:30-3:30 p.m. Oct. 13. Adults and middle and high school students can hear Bay Area author Marty Brounstein tell the true story of a Christian couple in the Netherlands who saved the lives of at least two dozen Jews during World War II and the Holocaust. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase.

    Mother Goose Time: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; and also 1:15-1:45 p.m. Fridays. There will be songs, rhymes, bounces, tickles and simple stories for tots up to age 3.

    Preschool Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Thursdays features stories and songs for preschoolers and toddlers, ages 3-5.

    Saturday Storytime: 11:15-11:45 a.m. Saturdays, for babies, preschoolers and kids. There will be stories, songs and more.

    Afternoon Storytime: 1:15-1:45 p.m. Fridays. There will be songs, rhymes, bounces and simple stories to introduce children ages 0-3 to literacy.

    Lego Creators Club: 2-3 p.m. Oct. 6. Kids can meet other builders and get tips, themes and challenges every month, plus book tie-ins to take home.

    Rockets! 2-3 p.m. Sept. 29. Kids and teens and the whole family can make a simple rocket and launch it at the library. The air-compressed launcher is safe. Those who missed Night of 1,000 Inventions, or want to make a new rocket are welcome.

    Hobbit Party! 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 9. Kids and adults can celebrate the book the whole city is reading this October: J.R.R. Tolkein's "The Hobbit." Participants can come in costume for crafts, games and more from the land of Middle Earth.

    Chess Instruction with a Certified Chess Coach: 3-5 p.m. Sept. 28. Teens and young people interested in learning chess or improving strategies may attend a free class by an instructor at the Berkeley Chess School. The event is funded through Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library.

    Contra Costa Teen Chess Club: 3-5 p.m. Fridays. Students 12-17 can get instruction and participate in friendly matches and tournaments. Participants who have them are encouraged to bring their own chess board and pieces.

    Afternoon Book Discussion: 1-2:30 p.m. Oct. 5. Adults can read with others and discuss "The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington" by Jennet Conant.

    Pleasant Hill Library Book Discussion: 6:30 p.m. in Room A. On Oct. 16, the discussion will be on J.R.R. Tolkein's "The Hobbit" or member's choice of Tolkein's work or related subjects on the author.

    Volunteer Orientation: 3-4 p.m. Oct. 13, 27. Teens and adults can apply to be a library volunteer. Participants will tour the library with a trained staff member.
