Running for education

Some 627 runners and walkers turned out to support education at the 10th annual Shell/Martinez Education Foundation Run-Walk on Oct. 7, in downtown Martinez. All proceeds from the race -- about $51,000 -- is going to the MEF to benefit Martinez Unified School District schools. In the first-ever 10K, Kevin Searls took the men's title, with Kevin Selby repeating as the 5K winner. Noreen Searls came in first in the women's 5K, with Lori Rogers winning the 10K. The Alhambra High School Band was on hand to provide entertainment, and a pre-race pasta feed the night before by the Martinez Kiwanis and Rotary clubs was held at the Martinez Senior Center.
