College Park musicians' showcase scheduled

The College Park High School instrumental music program presents its annual musicians' showcase Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Hilton Concord, 1970 Diamond Blvd., Concord.

"Let's Go to the Movies!" will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. and includes dinner, live and silent auctions and features entertainment by all six of the College Park High school music ensembles.

Football, food fundraiser will benefit FPHE grants

Magoo's Grill of Pleasant Hill is teaming up with Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education for Football Fundraiser for Education from 5 to 9 p.m. every Sunday and Monday through Dec. 23.

Participants can visit Magoo's, 1250 Contra Costa Blvd. in Pleasant Hill, to watch the game, have appetizers and dinner, and have Magoo's donate 25 percent of food sales to the FPHE grant program.

On Oct. 29 and Nov. 19, 50 percent of food sales will benefit the educational foundation. Additionally, former San Francisco 49er Dan Colchico will be visiting Oct. 29.

Open house, award ceremony set at Kumon

The Kumon Math and Reading Center of Pleasant Hill is holding an open house and award ceremony from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20, to celebrate student achievements.

The public is invited to come for refreshments, information and the chance to enter a drawing to win $2,000 in the Kumon Scholarship Sweepstake. The event will be held at the center, 2601 Pleasant Hill Road. Call 925-256-0420.

Helen Diller Foundation calls for nominations

Nominations are open until Jan. 6 for the Helen Diller Family Foundation Teen Tikkun Olam Awards, identifying Jewish teens whose volunteer service projects demonstrate a determined commitment to make the world a better place.

Up to 10 teens, five from California and five from across the country, will each receive an award of $36,000, to be used to further their philanthropic work or their education.

Qualifications for nomination:

  • Teens may be nominated by teachers, community leaders, rabbis, or anyone who knows the value of their volunteer service and commitment -- except family members. Teens may also nominate themselves.

  • Each candidate must be a U.S. resident, 13-19 at the time of nomination, and self-identify as Jewish.

  • Community service projects may benefit the general or Jewish community. Teens compensated for their services are not eligible. Fill out the online nomination at www.jewishfed.org/teenawards/process.

    Families sought to host exchange students

    Host families are needed for incoming foreign exchange high school students. Students are 15-18 years old, are English-speaking, have their own spending money and carry health insurance.

    Families can consist of a single parent, a childless couple or a retired couple.

    Host families are eligible to claim a monthly charitable contribution deduction on their itemized tax returns for each month they host a sponsored student.

    Highlands Elementary plans first walk-a-thon

    Students at Highlands Elementary in Concord will participate in the school's first Walk-a-thon fundraiser on Oct. 19.

    Students in all grades are soliciting pledges for the walk-a-thon, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting their school.

    As an added incentive, Highlands Principal Dr. Vicki Eversole has agreed to wear some silly accessories as fundraising goals are reached.

    Some local police and firefighters will also be on hand to walk with students in the PTA-sponsored event.
