Starzyk, who was killed in the line of duty Sept. 6, 2008. That day, Starzyk had responded to a domestic dispute in which a man with a gun had terrorized patrons at a beauty salon, and then forced his way into a second-story apartment where he had killed Catalina Torres and was threatening others. He fired at Starzyk, critically wounding him, but Starzyk was able to return fire, killing the man. For his extraordinary and heroic actions, Starzyk was posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor.
