MARTINEZ -- A Pittsburg business owner who prosecutors say solicited a hit man to maim a former employee pleaded not guilty Thursday to one count of attempted aggravated mayhem.
Joseph Mosis, 52, entered the plea in Superior Court. He is being held on $1.5 million bail.
Prosecutors allege that Mosis agreed to pay a hit man $2,000 to break his former employee's legs, and to cut off the man's penis and tongue. Unbeknown to Mosis, the hit man was an undercover Pittsburg police officer. Mosis was arrested Feb. 21.
Prosecutors say Mosis fired the employee, who then sued for back pay. The two agreed on a $4,500 settlement, but Mosis allegedly was so enraged he sought retribution.
Mosis faces nine years in state prison. His next court appearance will be at a preliminary hearing in Pittsburg Superior Court on April 16.
