MARTINEZ -- A man found dead Thursday morning in his cell at the County Jail has been identified as a 24-year-old Alamo resident.

The cause of death for David Bremer is still pending, according to the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office.

Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office, said Bremer was found unresponsive in his cell around 7:34 a.m. He had been booked into the facility about 1 a.m. after Walnut Creek police arrested him on an outstanding warrant and suspicion of resisting arrest.

During a routine medical screening, Bremer made statements about wanting to harm himself and was put into a safety cell and checked regularly by deputies, Lee said.

Lee has not responded to queries about how often Bremer was checked by staff or if he had harmed himself.

Bremer's death came almost one year to the day after a Pleasanton man hung himself at the same jail. A deputy sheriff found Joseph Behiel, 21, around 2:55 p.m. on March 21, 2013 after his arrest on weapons charges in San Ramon. Behiel died the following day at a hospital.
