With anchovies as bait at the end of their lines, anglers like Karollyn Zepeda, of San Pablo, from left, with her brothers Josiah, 15, Jozef, 6, and James, 8, gathered on the Martinez pier Saturday for Martinez Recreation's free Fishing Derby for kids. About 50 young people showed up with their own poles, fathers teaching their children, passing techniques to the next generation, and moms accompanying their kids for a morning of fishing fun in the waters of the Carquinez Strait.
