Cougars shining on court The Campolindo High volleyball team continues to excel. The Cougars beat rivals Acalanes and Miramonte in three games to open the Diablo Foothill Athletic League season and push their record to 12-2. Annie Shurtz had eight kills in the victory over the Matadors.

Vikings get over the hump The Diablo Valley College football team picked up its first win of the season with a 44-20 win over visiting Chabot on Sept. 21. Quinn Kaehler threw for an outrageous 490 yards and five touchdowns and Diante Jackson was the main beneficiary as he caught 11 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns. The win pushed Diablo Valley's record to 1-3 and got the Vikings over the hump after a string of narrow losses.

Berean earns dramatic win The Berean Christian High football team earned a thrilling 28-27 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Sept. 22 when Aaron Alexander caught a 74-yard touchdown pass with two seconds left, then caught the two-point conversion. The Eagles' Ethan Anderson rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns in the comeback victory.

On deck Campolindo at Miramonte, football, Sept. 28, 7 p.m. -- Between Campo's Brett Stephens and Miramonte's Nick Sheehan, expect lots of scoring and passing yards in this rivalry game. Hayward at Clayton Valley, football, Sept. 28, 7 p.m. -- Can the Eagles stay on the monster offensive roll they've been on? Standing in the way are the Famers, who beat College Park 13-7 last week. Northgate at College Park, water polo, Oct. 3, 4 p.m. -- Early positioning in the DVAL is at stake for both the boys and girls teams as the Broncos and Falcons meet in Pleasant Hill. The girls match starts at 4, with the boys set for 6.
Stars of the week Annie Marggraff, Acalanes girls cross country -- Marggraff had the top time at the DFAL Center Meet on Sept. 19. She completed the 2.95-mile course at Newhall Park in 17:54.2, which was the top time by nearly 25 seconds. Brett Stephens, Campolindo football -- The senior scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak on the final play of the game as the Cougars rallied past Acalanes 40-39 on Sept. 21. Stephens also completed 17 of 25 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns. Ana Boeriu, Northgate girls tennis -- The freshman is undefeated this season at No. 1 singles for the Broncos. She beat her Clayton Valley and Ygnacio Valley opponents in straight sets during the week of Sept. 17 to help keep Northgate undefeated in DVAL play. Taylor Henry, Diablo Valley College women's water polo -- Henry scored three goals to help lead the Vikings to a 9-1 win over Merced in the championship of the Cabrillo Tournament on Sept. 22. She also assisted on another goal. Quinn Kaehler, Diablo Valley College football -- Kaehler completed 34 of 61 passes for 490 yards and five touchdowns as the host Vikings beat Chabot 44-20 on Sept. 21. Andrew Trimble, Concord football -- Trimble led the Minutemen's defense to a 34-0 shutout of host Heritage on Sept. 21. He recorded 12 tackles, one sack and recovered two fumbles. Chris Williams, De La Salle football -- Williams found the end zone often in a 48-14 win over host Granada on Sept. 21, rushing for four scores. He also made an impact through the air, completing 12 of 16 passes for 190 yards. Adam Wood, Las Lomas football -- Wood completed 12 of 18 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Knights to a 49-24 victory over Alhambra in their DFAL opener on Sept. 21. Wood also rushed for a 1-yard TD.
