Q Recently eastbound Highway 4 opened a third lane in the construction zone from Loveridge Road in Pittsburg to just past Somersville Road in Antioch. I am curious about the speed limit. Until the lane opened that stretch of freeway had been 55 mph. Has the speed limit changed back to 65 mph? It's been hard to go 55 through that section without getting honked at or tailgated. I wish the CHP would monitor it better. Speeding is rampant.
A The speed limit has not changed. It drops to 55 mph eastbound between Harbor Street and Loveridge and will not be changed until all work ends on Loveridge around late March. At that time, the speed limit will be raised to 65 mph and drop to 55 mph at the Somersville Road/Auto Center Drive interchange.
Q Can you find out what Caltrans is planning on Interstate 80 at Pinole? These last few weeks, a number of orange detour signs have been set up on the Hilltop Road overpass and the Fitzgerald-Richmond Parkway overpass. These signs are confusing if you are unfamiliar with the area.
A There is ongoing construction for the I-80 Integrated Corridor Mobility Program. Caltrans will have contractors check their signs and cover the ones that are not being used. These detours will occur only at night.
The $80 million project will focus on ramp metering, managing traffic incidents and coordinating signals along parallel streets from the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to the Carquinez Bridge. It should be completed in 2015.

Q If the goal of the person in charge of the Warm Springs Boulevard road work is to inflict maximum misery on those of us who live and work here, then mission accomplished. It wasn't enough to have Warren closed, and Mission under construction in not one but two places at the two major arteries and Grimmer Boulevard reduced to one lane. No, someone got the brilliant idea to fix Warm Springs in front of where the new BART station will be by strictly reducing northbound traffic to one lane (which road improvement should have been done before the other construction).
This has always been a choke point, but drivers had been able to cooperate and squeeze into almost two lanes. Now that's no longer possible, and traffic backs up to the CVS shopping center. Why is this process so awful? Do they realize how many people live and work here in addition to the people who try to avoid 880 and 680 by taking city streets? The person in charge should be sentenced to driving this section over and over every day between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
A The Warm Springs work is necessary as part of the station construction. BART officials say Warm Springs had one lane going in each direction before, but the difference is that the lanes are narrower. Work is expected to last through the spring.
Q To the traffic engineers at Caltrans: Please have the Interstate 880 southbound carpool lane end back at Brokaw Road, at a minimum. The last-minute crazies diving to the right from this lane at the last minute to make the 101 south onramp is what is making the 880 backup horrendous.
Notwithstanding your statement that it has made things quicker, I and my 50,000 friends know better. I have a watch as well.
A I have forwarded your plea to the state and it is now under review. I doubt if the change will be made, but complaints similar to yours keep rolling in.
Q Back on Jan. 11, 2011, I asked you about getting the westbound Highway 92 to southbound Interstate 280 tunnel cleaned because it had a couple of years or more of dirt and soot built up on the tile walls. You forwarded my request to Caltrans. Well, to my surprise a couple of weeks ago when I went through the walls were clean. It only took them 34 months but maybe the statute of limitations is three years. Anyway, thanks for the help.
