Q I was in Pacific Palisades recently and paid $4.59 a gallon for gasoline. Is this what we have to look forward to up here?
A No. Gas prices should fall a nickel or so over the next two weeks, despite anxiety over problems in Iraq. While prices remain at July levels unseen since 2008, there hasn't been and should not be a rapid run-up at the pump that some pundits were fretting about a few days ago.
Q I was riding my bicycle from Felton to Scotts Valley on Mount Hermon Road. It's a major thoroughfare, with quite a bit of traffic, and there are several places where poison oak from the side of the road has grown so that it blocks half of the bike lane and shoulder, causing bicyclists to need to ride much closer to traffic than they might otherwise. I think that removing this poison oak would greatly enhance bicycle safety along that stretch of road.
A Me, too. This is the time of year crews begin trimming weeds, and this will be high on the list.
Q I commute to work along Martin Avenue in Santa Clara, on the west side of the San Jose Airport, and I've seen some activity over the past couple of months that has me wondering if they're restoring the parking lots that used to be over on that side. What's going on?
A No. This is work on a new $82 million corporate aviation facility being financed and constructed by Signature Flight Support. It's expected to be completed by January 2016, in time for Super Bowl 50, when airport officials expect a large contingent of corporate jets to arrive into the Bay Area. All on-airport parking facilities east of the airport adjacent to the terminals were moved in 2010, freeing up the former long-term parking lot along Martin for this effort.
Q It seems that most recent (6 and 7 series) auto license plates say "dmv.ca.gov" on the bottom but not all of them. My theory is that plates issued through the website have it, but those issued at DMV offices don't. Nothing else makes sense.
A Hopefully this does. The website first appeared on license plates in 2010. Cars that have the plate with NO website are those that had a plate before 2010. All new plates issued after 2010 have the website at the bottom.
Q Well, it's just taken me an hour and a half to go three blocks at Almaden Expressway and Cherry Avenue. Traffic northbound on Almaden was stop and stop from Cherry to beyond Blossom Hill. At one intersection I sat and watched the light turn green and then red twice without moving an inch.
Why wasn't this work being done at night, when Almaden is relatively calm?
A The contractor closed the lanes in the afternoon, without permission, and hereafter will be limited to night work. In addition, they closed two of three lanes when only one lane was to be closed.
