Q After reading the Roadshow article about the late-night backups on the Benicia Bridge because of cuts in the number of toll takers, I wanted to share a video I took on the bridge a few weeks ago at 10:30 p.m.

Andrew Doh

San Jose

A What a video it is. I counted around 100 cars in just one cash/FasTrak lane. One hundred! At 10:30 at night! It's at www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQuP41RiDmw.

Q I had seen how bad it was previously and prepared myself to take a video this time around. The time seems very excessive, right? I don't mind because I have FasTrak but this really doesn't look good for anyone visiting our state.

Andrew Doh

A You have that right.

Q Your reply to Chris Marx over the night backups on the Benicia Bridge was disappointing. Bridge officials who are reducing the number of toll takers now in anticipation of using all-electronic payments SEVERAL years from now are public servants paid by us humble taxpayers. They are not serving the public by causing these horrendous backups. Could you use some of your clout to get them to do their jobs?

Wayne Menuz

San Jose

A You are 100 percent right to scold me. It wasn't until I saw Andrew's video that I became upset. There are nine cash/FasTrak lanes on this bridge and sometimes as few as three or four are open. This is a major getaway point for the Bay Area. Caltrans says it will re-evaluate the mess and perhaps add more toll takers. They need to do so -- pronto.

Q I was keeping a close eye on AB 2013 as it went through the state Legislature. On June 10th I mailed in my application and $8 check to the DMV for the HOV green stickers to use on my 2014 Accord plug-in hybrid. I was just lying low and waiting for them to possibly kick it back.

But on July 1 they deposited my check and my stickers are on their way! DMV is going to issue 15,000 more green stickers for a total of 55,000. Don't procrastinate. Get them while you can.

Mike Kam

A This one snuck by me. It was part of a budget transportation trailer bill signed by Gov. Jerry Brown to increase the number of green stickers from 40,000 to 55,000. The 40,000 limit was reached several weeks ago.

But the news may be even better for owners of plug-in hybrids who want to drive solo in the diamond lane. If AB 2013 is approved later this year, the limit would jump to 70,000 in 2015.

Q I need to drive down to Los Angeles from the Bay Area and was thinking of taking Interstate 5. I know several months back there were lane restrictions in some areas due to construction. Are these still a problem or has the work been completed?

Rick C.

A There is always construction on Interstate 5 into the L.A. area, but it's bearable this summer compared to the past couple of years. Plus, most of the paving work is being done at night.
