games to watch in January
Salesian at El Cerrito, Jan. 14, 7 p.m. -- The Gauchos' only losses last season in the Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division, one of the toughest leagues in Northern California, were to the Pride. Led by Tyrell Alcorn and Jovontae Carleton, El Cerrito looks to avenge those losses to Salesian, the defending TCAL-Rock and North Coast Section Division IV champion.
Bishop O'Dowd at Berkeley, Jan. 17, 5:30 p.m. -- The Yellowjackets host the Dragons in a West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division clash. O'Dowd ran away with the league title last season, but Berkeley, reinvigorated under new coach Mark Deluca, should give Ivan Rabb and Co. a stiff challenge.
De La Salle at Monte Vista, Jan. 17, 7 p.m. -- The atmosphere is always electric when the Spartans and Mustangs get together. This early-season game should give the winner the inside track toward the East Bay Athletic League title.
Dublin at Campolindo, Jan. 29, 5:30 p.m. -- The defending Diablo Foothill Athletic League champion Gaels should be tested by the Cougars, who look to be the favorite to win their second league title in three seasons.
Freedom at Heritage, Jan. 31, 5:30 p.m. -- The Patriots and Falcons meet in a game that not only features dynamic players Elliot Smith and Shon Briggs, but could also help decide the Bay Valley Athletic League champion.

Bishop O'Dowd at Berkeley, Jan. 17, 7 p.m. -- The Dragons cruised through the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division last season but should face a difficult test when they travel to Berkeley to the play the Yellowjackets.
Monte Vista at Carondelet, Jan. 17, 7 p.m. -- If the Cougars are going to be tested in the East Bay Athletic League, it'll be by the Mustangs, the defending NCS Division I champions.
Miramonte vs. Salesian, Jan. 20, 5 p.m. -- The Matadors, expected to run away with the Diablo Foothill Athletic League championship, face the Pride at the Martin Luther King Classic at Marin Catholic High-Kentfield. Both teams are expected to challenge for section championships in 2014, with Miramonte in Division III and Salesian in Division IV.
Carondelet vs. St. Mary's, Jan. 25, 5 p.m. -- The premier game of the Bentley Shootout in Lafayette features the Cougars playing the defending NCS Division IV champion Panthers. Carondelet won last season's meeting with St. Mary's 70-64 at the Presentation Shootout in San Jose in December 2012.
