Mats get revenge against Drake

After losing to Drake-San Anselmo twice last season in tournament play, the Miramonte High School girls volleyball team defeated the Pirates 25-14, 16-25, 15-8 in the championship match of the Albany Tournament on Sept. 19. Juliana Stivanicevic totaled 61 kills for the tournament and had 12 kills, seven digs, three blocks and three aces in the championship victory. Mary Diamantidis also had a big tournament, totaling 62 assists, 34 kills and 19 blocks.

Broncos take fifth at Sierra Shootout

Behind solid play by Sam Trenkwalder, the Northgate High School girls water polo team placed fifth at the Sierra Shootout in Rocklin on Sept. 19. In the fifth-place match, Trenkwalder scored two of the Broncos three goals in a 3-2 win over Vintage-Napa. She also scored all six goals in a 6-4 win over Presentation-San Jose in pool play.

Eagles continue to roll

The Clayton Valley High School football team hasn't had much of a test so far this season, but a 47-7 win over host Irvington on Sept. 19 certainly did little to disprove the theory that the Eagles are set for another good season. Jeremy McKillip ran for 106 yards, caught two passes for 57 yards, and scored twice in the win.

Bulldogs cruise to win

The Alhambra High School football team had little trouble holding serve at home on Sept. 18, beating Benicia 41-21. R.J. Cellini had a good game through the air, completing 9 of 10 passes for 127 yards and four touchdowns. Richard Calhoun also racked up 152 yards rushing in the win. With the victory, Alhambra improved to 2-1.

Foothill at Miramonte, football, Sept. 25, 7 p.m. — The Matadors return home in search of a victory after losing 14-10 to Glacier Peak-Sammamish (WA) on Sept. 19.

Stanford Invitational, cross country, Sept. 26, all day — The best cross country runners from across the state will congregate at Stanford for the annual Stanford Invitational.

College Park at Northgate, girls tennis, Sept. 29, 3:30 p.m. — The Broncos have continued their success this year despite the graduation of star Lauren Curry, and they'll look to continue their roll through the DVAL with a home match against College Park.

Berean Christian at Concord, girls volleyball, Sept. 29, 6:30 p.m. — The Eagles head to Concord to take on the Minutemen in a DVAL showdown.

Stars of the week

Juliana Stivanicevic, Miramonte girls volleyball — Stivanicevic led the Matadors to a title at the Albany Tournament, amassing 61 kills for the tournament.

Andrew Ahr, Campolindo football — Ahr caught nine passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns but it wasn't quite enough as Campolindo lost to host El Cerrito 30-28 on Sept. 18.

Daniel Adler, Diablo Valley College football — Adler caught 11 passes for 213 yards in a 47-44 win over visiting Los Medanos on Sept. 18. He scored on a 94-yard pass from Blake Wayne.

R.J. Cellini, Alhambra football — Cellini tossed four touchdowns in a 41-21 win over visiting Benicia on Sept. 18.

Ethan Morrow, Mt. Diablo football — Morrow completed six of his seven passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown in a 56-0 win over visiting De Anza on Sept. 18.

Alec Pica, Concord football — Pica found the end zone five times in a 64-6 win over visiting Skyline on Sept. 18. He carried the ball 10 times for 128 yards and caught two passes for 73 yards.

Sam Trenkwalder, Northgate girls water polo — Trenkwalder was Northgate's leading scorer at the Sierra Shootout, scoring two goals in the Broncos fifth-place match win over Vintage-Napa on Sept. 19. She also scored six goals in a win over Presentation-San Jose.

Marquis Waters, Las Lomas football — Waters rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown to help the Knights beat host Northgate 35-10 in the "Battle of the Creek" on Sept. 19.
