It takes a bit of time to get to know your neighbors when moving to a new community. It can also be tough to meet others outside long-standing social circles like your child's school functions and church.
That's why the Piedmont Newcomers Club formed nearly 25 years ago. It's a way to connect neighbors of the Piedmont community who may not otherwise meet and to build unity throughout the city of more than 10,000 residents.
"There's a lot of fundraising that goes on in Piedmont and very organized school events that help people get to know each other, but this is something separate from that," said Jane Violich, 39, who has lived in Piedmont for three years with her husband and two young children. "This club helps you get to know people in a different way than you might encounter.
"I think this year we're trying to branch out. We're trying to appeal to a broader audience," added Violich, a club member for three years and board member the past two. "It's not just for the new people who move into the neighborhood anymore. We welcome everyone from Piedmont to join. It can be a really fun way to get to know people in the community."
The Newcomers Club hosts events throughout the year. Most events are family-oriented, such as its recent Halloween bash, an end of the year holiday party and a weekly playgroup for kids. But the grown-ups get their fun with wine tasting parties, "guys" and "gals" nights out and Progressive Dinners —
"Those are my favorite. You actually sit across the dinner table with people you may have never met otherwise and have conversations," said Blair Paige, 41, vice president of membership and two-year resident. "These club events are an excellent way to meet people regardless of one's affiliation with schools or religion, or which section of Piedmont you live in or how old you are."
The club sends fliers to new homeowners in the area, but most Piedmonters find out about the group through word of mouth. Scott Shepherd, 44, and his then-pregnant wife, Lara, moved to Piedmont a year ago from Chicago. The couple's real estate agent lives nearby and encouraged the Shepherds to join the club.
"We didn't know anyone in Piedmont and this group has helped us meet some really good people, good friends. It's nice to know your neighbors and other people in your community," said Shepherd, now the father of 8-month-old Ava Bond who helps organize Guys Night Out. "The Newcomers Club is a good group of like-minded, young-oriented people. It helps build cohesiveness within the community and it's a really good thing."
