The 2011-12 sports year is in the books and while it's time to prepare for summer vacations, it's also a good time to take a look back at the major highlights in the area. The fall belonged to Kyra Holt (12), top right, and the Albany High girls volleyball team, which reached the California Interscholastic Federation state championship match for the first time in school history. The Cougars lost a five-game thriller to Cathedral Catholic-San Diego to cap a tremendous season. The winter featured hardwood success as Elisha Davis, bottom, and the Berkeley High girls basketball team returned to the Division I state championship game, where it fell to Mater Dei-Santa Ana. Next year, the Yellowjackets will face a fierce fight when they move to a new league that includes Division III state champion Bishop O'Dowd. Justin Johnson (1), top left, and the El Cerrito High boys basketball team won its third straight Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League title with an undefeated 12-0 league record. The spring figured to include another state title for St. Mary's High track star Trinity Wilson, who was the defending girls 110-meter high hurdle champion. But a fractured toe, suffered at the Stanford Invitational, cut the season short for the UCLA-bound senior.
