FAIRFIELD -- A man who jumped out of a van as it was traveling on Rockville Road in Fairfield last week died at John Muir Medical Center on Thursday, a Fairfield police lieutenant said.
Richard Kerr, 33, a local transient, might have been under the influence of drugs when he made a statement to the effect of "I'm out of here" before he exited the passenger side of the van around 11 a.m. on Aug. 1.
The van was traveling on Rockville Road near Oliver Road alongside Interstate Highway 80, Lt. Greg Hurlbut said.
Kerr suffered injuries to his head and torso from hitting the pavement, Hurlbut said. An autopsy has been conducted but the coroner's office is still awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
The female driver, whose name has not been released, was not arrested but could face a felony hit-and-run charge because she did not stop the van after Kerr jumped out, Hurlbut said.
Police have confiscated the white van and have taken statements from witnesses who were present.
