OAKLAND -- A woman was fatally injured after she ran into the path of a CHP motorcycle officer driving down a West Oakland street Friday night, investigators said.

The crash occurred shortly after 10 p.m., as the CHP officer was driving his 2004 BMW patrol motorcycle in the 900 block of West MacArthur Boulevard, approaching San Pablo Avenue and the Interstate 580 onramp.

A 43-year-old Hayward woman stepped off the north sidewalk and began running across the street, directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle, CHP spokeswoman Sgt. Diana McDermott said.

The motorcycle hit the woman and the officer was thrown into the street, McDermott said.

Both the woman and the officer were rushed to a nearby hospital. The woman was declared dead on arrival, and the officer had moderate injuries. He was reported stable Saturday morning.

The woman's name was withheld Saturday morning while officials tried to contact her family. The officer was identified as Sgt. Roberto Barrera.

It was not immediately clear how fast Barrera was driving at the time of the incident, McDermott said.

"This is very unfortunate, and my heart goes out to the families and the people involved on both sides," McDermott said. "It's the aftermath we all deal with now, and it's a lot to go through."

Oakland police and CHP officers both responded to the scene and both agencies are investigating.
