Encinal dominates Pinole Valley The Encinal High boys water polo team easily defeated Pinole Valley 17-3 on Sept. 20. Dylan Tonningsen had a game-high seven goals, and teammate Isaac Maximov added four scores. Jeremy Ardourel and Max Taylor each had two goals apiece for the Jets.
College Prep sweeps Holy Names The College Prep High girls volleyball team improved to 4-1 in the Bay Counties League-East with a 25-18, 25-10, 25-19 victory over Holy Names on Sept. 21. Lucy Moradian slammed 15 kills and had three aces for College Prep. Teammates Claudia Chung and Daiana Takashima had 18 assists and 17 digs apiece.
Berkeley upends Piedmont The Berkeley High girls volleyball team swept Piedmont 25-14, 25-20, 25-21 on Sept. 21 to stay undefeated in West Alameda County Conference action. Molly Ginsburg had 30 digs and nine kills, and teammate Naomi Overstreet also had nine kills for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in WACC action after the win. Berkeley's Dayna Hubert added 15 assists and seven digs.

Stars of the week Gabe Arias-Sheridan, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys cross country -- Arias-Sheridan won a TCAL meet against St. Mary's and John Swett on Sept. 20 with a time of 17 minutes, 6 seconds for a 2.93 mile course at Tilden Park in Berkeley. Corey Sails, Encinal football -- Sails rushed for a team-high 131 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 1-, 36- and 2-yards in the Jets' 34-8 victory over Encinal on Sept. 21. Jack Wellman, Alameda football -- Wellman had two interceptions, including one for a touchdown, in the Hornets' 34-14 victory over Hillsdale-San Mateo on Sept. 21. Molly Ginsburg, Berkeley girls volleyball -- Ginsburg produced 30 digs and nine kills for the Yellowjackets in a 25-14, 25-20, 25-21 victory over Piedmont on Sept. 21. Austin Harper, El Cerrito football -- Harper paced the Gauchos in rushing with 77 yards on just four carries in a 54-0 shutout of Valley Christian-Dublin on Sept. 21. He also scored two touchdowns. Spencer Kim, Piedmont football -- Despite playing with a broken left pinkie, Kim completed 6 of his 11 passes for 132 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions in one half of action in the Highlanders' 19-6 victory over Washington-San Francisco on Sept. 22. Spencer Moore, St. Mary's girls cross country -- Moore took first in a TCAL meet against St. Mary's and John Swett on Sept. 20 by more than a minute with a time of 19:58 for a 2.93 mile course at Tilden Park in Berkeley. Kendrick Payne, Skyline football -- Payne scored three touchdowns, including two in the last 6:09 of the game, in the Titans' 40-36 come-from-behind victory over Ygnacio Valley on Sept. 21. He won the game on a 10-yard run with 59 seconds remaining.
