SAN FRANCISCO -- Reds ace Johnny Cueto lasted just eight pitches before leaving Game 1 of his National League Division Series start against the Giants on Saturday.

The Reds announced that Cueto has back spasms and is listed as day to day.

The Cy Young Award candidate grimaced in pain while delivering a pitch to the Giants' Marco Scutaro with one out in the first inning. After consultation with the Cincinnati training staff and manager Dusty Baker, the right-hander walked off the mound -- as an AT&T Park crowd cheered.

Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty told TBS reporter Tom Verducci that the team is hopeful Cueto will be able to start Game 3 on Tuesday in Cincinnati.

Mat Latos, who had been scheduled to start Game 3, entered Saturday night's game in relief. Cueto went 19-9 with a 2.78 ERA during the regular season. He ranked among the National League leaders in wins (third), ERA (third) and innings pitched (fifth.)
