EBAL volleyball rules roost in NCS quarters East Bay Athletic League volleyball teams swept the four quarterfinal matches in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs on Nov. 10, guaranteeing the league a seventh consecutive section title at the top level. Advancing to the semifinals were No. 1 California, No. 2 San Ramon Valley, No. 3 Amador Valley and No. 4 Monte Vista. The Mustangs upended EBAL rival Foothill 25-18,20-25,25-19, 25-17 in the quarterfinals as Erin Brodbeck had 10 kills, 18 digs and seven service points.

SRV, Amador roar into football showdown The San Ramon Valley and Amador Valley football teams continued their second-half surges with blowout wins to open the NCS Division I playoffs, giving the EBAL four teams in the quarterfinals. Dublin also advanced to the Division II quarterfinals with a 40-21 win over Livermore, the EBAL's lone Division II team. Amador Valley rode the hot hand of quarterback Kyle Moreno and balanced scoring in a 45-27 win over Castro Valley on Nov. 10. In the Wolves' 66-0 win over Antioch, Justin Bangay made the most of his two receptions, with touchdown grabs of 40 and 96 yards. Wolves quarterback Cameron Birse was 9 for 13 for 255 yards and four touchdowns.

Mustangs ace Tamalpais test The Monte Vista girls tennis team clinched its second NCS Division I title in the past three years with a 5-2 victory over defending champion Tamalpais in the finals on Nov. 10. The Mustangs (24-2), led by the EBAL champion doubles team of Danielle Yancey and Betsy Main and singles star Kaitlyn Haithcock, avenged a loss against Tamalpais from the 2011 NCS final.

On deck Foothill at California, NCS football, Nov. 16, 7 p.m. -- The EBAL rivals will meet for the second time this season in the quarterfinals of the Division I playoffs The No. 2 seeded Grizzlies (8-2) beat the No. 7 Falcons (6-5) 36-7 on Sept. 28. Amador Valley at San Ramon Valley, NCS football, Nov. 17, 7 p.m. -- Two of the area's hottest teams will meet in the Division I quarterfinals as the Dons will try to avenge a 22-15 loss against the Wolves on Sept. 28. NCS cross country, Meet of Champions, Nov. 17, 8:30 a.m. -- Amador Valley High star Jena Pianin, who set a league meet course record, will lead another strong EBAL girls contingent at Hayward High. San Ramon Valley's boys squad has won three consecutive team titles in its divisions, and Granada has won the past two Division I girls titles.
Stars of the week Kristina Dunworth, Amador Valley volleyball -- Dunworth had 24 assists to lead the Dons past Heritage 25-20, 25-18, 25-12 in the quarterfinals of the NCS Division I playoffs. Jack Finney, Foothill football -- The tight end had five receptions for 83 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown, in a 28-17 win over Deer Valley on Nov. 9 in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs. Griffith Gates, Foothill football -- Gates had 143 yards rushing on 27 carries and two touchdowns against Deer Valley. Grant Miller, Amador Valley football -- Miller had three receptions for 101 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown catch, in the Dons win over Castro Valley Nov. 10 in the NCS Division I playoffs. Jalen Avery, Monte Vista football -- Avery competed a outstanding season with a touchdown catch and an interception return for a score in the Mustangs' 55-29 loss against Pittsburg on Nov. 9 in the NCS Division I playoffs. Devon Gasparini, San Ramon Valley girls water polo -- Gasparini made 11 saves as the No. 1 seeded Wolves beat rival Monte Vista 7-1 in the NCS Division I championship game on Nov. 10. Conor Neumann, San Ramon Valley boys water polo -- Neumann made two clutch goals in the final 1 minutes and 36 seconds, but it wasn't enough in a 9-8 loss to Miramonte in the NCS Division I final on Nov. 10.
