STANFORD -- Coach Tara VanDerveer announced the signing of four players Thursday in another big recruiting class for the fourth-ranked Cardinal women's basketball team.

The class of 2013, ranked fifth nationally by one recruiting website, features 6-foot-3 forward Erica McCall of Bakersfield-Ridgeview High. Joining McCall are Kailee Johnson of Portland, Ore., Karlie Samuelson of Huntington Beach and point guard Khaliyah "Lili" Thompson of Mansfield, Texas. Guard Briana Roberson of Fullerton has said she plans to walk-on next season.

"Some words that I think really describe this class are versatile, athletic and competitive," VanDerveer said in a statement. "Our players are coming out of high school very skilled, and we will continue to have good team speed."

Johnson and McCall will add depth to a frontcourt that will lose two-year starter Joslyn Tinkle to graduation. Johnson, a 6-3 forward, excels in playing defense and rebounding. She averaged 13.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for Central Catholic High last season.

"Aside from the obvious excellent program and academic opportunities, I really enjoyed the girls on the team and the three other girls that I came on my visit with." Johnson said in a statement.

McCall is a two-time gold medalist with the USA Basketball. In 2011, McCall was part of the under-16 squad that captured gold at the FIBA Americas Championship, qualifying the Americans for the under-17 World Championship that the Americans also won.

"What is a better accomplishment that includes an NCAA championship and a Stanford degree?" McCall said.

Karlie Samuelson, a 5-11 wing player, will join older sister Bonnie next season. Samuelson averaged 18 points per game for Edison High and was named to the Cal-Hi Sports All-Junior Fifth Team. She is playing for Mater Dei this season.

  • Stanford's women's swimming team announced the signing of London Olympian Lia Neal, who won a bronze medal in the 400-meter relay. The Cardinal also signed Kassidy Cook, one of the country's most promising divers. She missed qualifying for the London Games in synchronized diving by one point.

New swim coach Greg Meehan's first class also includes Grace Carlson, Nicole Stafford, Tara Halsted and Bridget Boushka.
