Knights capture NCS title

  • The Las Lomas High girls volleyball team earned its first North Coast Section Division II championship in school history by beating host and No. 3 seed Maria Carrillo-Santa Rosa 25-16, 23-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-12 on Nov. 17. The No. 4 seeded Knights also knocked off top seed Redwood-Larkspur on the road in the semifinals in five games. Las Lomas won the final three points of the deciding game against the Pumas.

    ClayCord Cup rematch on deck

  • There will be a rematch of the ClayCord Cup after Clayton Valley and Concord both won their NCS Division II quarterfinal games. Joe Protheroe (427 rushing yards, five TDs) led top-seeded Clayton Valley to a 47-7 rout over Dublin on Nov. 16 while No. 5 Concord won a rain-soaked game over host Casa Grande-Petaluma 14-6 on Nov. 17. Uaisele Manoa had a 41-yard pick-six for Concord in the stout defensive effort. Clayton Valley hosts Concord at 7 p.m. on Nov. 23.

    Falcons shine at NCS meet

  • On a wet and muddy day, the College Park High girls cross country team took second place in Division II at the North Coast Section championhips at Hayward High on Nov. 17. Freshman Jamie Busby took sixth individually to lead the Falcons. The College Park boys took fourth in Division II, paced by junior Parker Munson's sixth place finish.

  • Amador Valley at De La Salle, football, Nov. 23, 7 p.m. -- The Spartans will need to defeat the Dons for the second time this season in order to advance to the NCS Division I championship game.

  • Northgate at Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park, football, Nov. 24, 7 p.m. -- The Broncos will try to continue their historic NCS playoff run when they head to the North Bay to face the undefeated Cougars in the semifinals.

  • CIF state championships, cross country, Nov. 24, 8:30 a.m. -- The state's best runners will face off for state titles at Fresno's Woodward Park two days after Thanksgiving.

    Stars of the week

  • Rachel Linden, Las Lomas girls volleyball -- Linden had two big games to help the Knights win their first NCS Division II title in school history. She had 39 assists and 19 digs when Las Lomas upset No. 1 Redwood in the quarterfinals on Nov. 14.

  • Joe Pelletier, Northgate football -- The senior quarterback, who also plays on the defensive line, completed 11 of 18 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown in a 30-6 victory over Newark Memorial on Nov. 17 in the NCS Division II quarterfinals. Pelletier also ran for a score.

  • C.J. Best, Diablo Valley football -- Best ran for 113 yards and a touchdown to help the Vikings beat Laney 30-27 in the East Bay Bowl on Nov. 17. Best, who also caught three passes, was named the game's Offensive MVP.

  • Jamie Busby, College Park girls cross country -- The freshman was sixth in the NCS Division II girls race to lead the Falcons to a second-place team finish on Nov. 17.

  • Aidan Goltra, Campolindo boys cross country -- Goltra posted the fastest time of the day in any division in winning the NCS Division III boys race. Goltra won in 15:30 on the 3-mile Hayward High course on Nov. 17.

  • Annie Marggraff, Acalanes girls cross country -- The senior won the NCS Division III girls race on Nov. 17 with a time of 18:25 on the 3-mile Hayward High course. Marggraff's finish helped the Dons win the Division III team title for the first time in school history.

  • Joe Protheroe, Clayton Valley football -- The senior rushed for a school-record 427 yards and five touchdowns to propel the Eagles to a 47-7 victory in the NCS Division II quarterfinals on Nov. 16.

  • J.D. Ratchford, Campolindo boys water polo -- The senior gave an oral commitment to play water polo at Cal.
