Wolves' Hanze cracks top 50 at state meet San Ramon Valley senior Zach Hanze was 50th at the state cross country meet in Division I on Nov. 24 in Fresno, in a time of 15:59. San Ramon Valley, the NCS team champion, finished 14th as a team, two spots behind De La Salle, the NCS runner-up. San Ramon Valley junior Jason Intravaia was 54th in 16:03.

Pianin third at state Amador Valley High star Jena Pianin completed a brilliant varsity career with a third-place finish at the state cross country championships Nov. 24 in Fresno. Pianin completed the swift Division I girls 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes, 39 seconds -- the best placing by an East Bay girl in Division I since 1989. Simi Valley's Sarah Baxter won the Division I race in a course record time of 16:40. Granada senior Maryann Gong was a solid 31st in 18:32 and Granada freshman Megan McCandless was 33rd in 18:35. Monte Vista freshman Brook Starn was 37th in 18:37. Granada was 13th in the team standings with 277 points. The versatile Pianin, the East Bay Athletic League champion, also took first at the North Coast Section meet Nov. 17 in Hayward, besting runner-up Christine Bayliss of San Ramon Valley by three seconds.

California football falls to Logan No. 3 seed James Logan, after spotting California seven-point lead on an 8-yard Karris Johnson touchdown run, rolled to a 40-7 win over the No. 2 Grizzlies on Nov. 24 in San Ramon in the NCS Division I football semifinals. Johnson finished his fine varsity career with 84 yards on 17 carries. It was a strong season for the Grizzlies (9-3), who earned an EBAL co-championship and beat Foothill 36-6 in the NCS quarterfinals.
On deck James Logan vs. De La Salle, football, Dec. 1, 7 p.m. -- In a much-anticipated battled between Bay Area juggernauts, the top-seeded Spartans (12-0) will face the No. 3 Colts (12-1) at Dublin High in the NCS Division I championship. Northern California team tournament, girls tennis, Nov. 29, TBA -- Monte Vista, the EBAL and North Coast Section Division I team champion, will play in the second round against a yet-to-be-determined opponent Nov. 30 at the Natomas Racquet Club in Sacramento. If Monte Vista wins, it will play in the Nov. 30 semifinals at 11 a.m., followed by the finals at 3 p.m. if the Mustangs advance.
Stars of the week Jacob De Maio, Monte Vista boys soccer -- De Maio, a midfielder, scored in the Mustangs' 3-0 nonleague win over Liberty on Nov. 21. Also scoring for the Mustangs were midfielders Jackson Meyer and Michael Anderson. Mike Harris, DVC men's basketball -- Harris, a Monte Vista graduate, had a game-high 23 points as the Vikings trounced American River in the consolation final of the Shasta Invitational on Nov. 18. Sarah Luther, San Ramon Valley girls basketball -- Luther, a junior post player, had a game-high 16 points in a 61-36 nonleague win over host Freedom on Nov. 21. Jamey Smart, Athenian boys basketball -- Smart had a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds as the owls beat St. Elizabeth 68-41 on Nov. 24. Sabrina Clayton, California girls volleyball -- Clayton had 26 kills, 12 digs and passed well as the No. 3 seeded Grizzlies beat No. 6 Homestead-Cupertino in the NorCal Division I first round on Nov. 20. Jennifer Gill, California girls volleyball -- Gill had 12 kills and 10 digs, helping the Grizzlies beat Homestead in the NorCal playoffs.
