Minutemen take title

  • The Concord High boys basketball team won the Straw Hat Classic by beating Marshall-San Francisco 60-39 in the championship game Dec. 1. Tylek Farley had 13 points and 15 rebounds in the final to earn tournament MVP honors. Teammates Bryan Muonekwu (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Pablo Rojas were also all-tournament picks.

    Falcons start out hot

  • The College Park High boys basketball team is off to a fast start, winning its first three games of the season during the week of Nov. 26. Senior Mikey Eggleton averaged 15 points, five assists and five rebounds as the Falcons beat Pinole Valley, Alhambra and Casa Grande-Petaluma. Sophomore Joe DeMers had a team-high 17 points in the Falcons' closest win, a 63-57 overtime win over rival Alhambra on Nov. 28.

    Dons secure championship

  • Behind goals from Ben Croze and Max Mirner, the Acalanes High boys soccer team beat Campolindo 2-0 to win the Winter Soccer Classic Silver Division on Dec. 1. Both goals came in the first half. The victory pushed Acalanes' record to 4-0 on the year while the loss was Campolindo's first of the season.

  • Miramonte at Campolindo, boys soccer, Dec. 7, 6:15 p.m. -- After playing Acalanes in its DFAL opener on Dec. 5, Campolindo will host the Matadors. On the girls side, Miramonte hosts Campolindo at 6:15 p.m.

  • De La Salle vs. Folsom, football, Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m. -- The Spartans travel to Sacramento State to play Folsom for the NorCal Open Division championship. Folsom, which won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II title, is unbeaten and won a state title in 2010.

  • Clayton Valley Charter vs. Oakdale, football, Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m. -- The Eagles will play Oakdale at Lincoln High in Stockton in the NorCal Division II title game with a berth in the state bowl game on the line. Clayton Valley is in uncharted territory having never advanced past the sectional level.

  • Las Lomas at Northgate, boys basketball, Dec. 11, 7 p.m. -- The annual Battle of the Creek takes place on Castle Rock Road this year.

    Stars of the week

  • Madison Casten, Northgate girls basketball -- The sophomore guard scored 23 points to lead the Broncos to a win in their season opener, 41-40, over Freedom on Nov. 28.

  • Andrew Buckley, De La Salle football -- The versatile senior caught six passes for 131 yards, including touchdowns of 44 and 37 yards, as the Spartans won the NCS Division I title 52-7 over James Logan on Dec. 1. He also had one of the Spartans' four interceptions from his free safety position.

  • Tianna Coniglio, Alhambra girls basketball -- Coniglio was an all-tournament selection and scored 17 points in a 50-40 win over Acalanes on Nov. 30 to lift the Bulldogs into the championship game of their own tournament, the Lady Bulldog Classic. Alhambra fell to Monte Vista in the title game.

  • Mikey Eggleton, College Park boys basketball -- The senior guards scored 19 points in a season-opening win over Pinole Valley on Nov. 27, then scored another 19 points along with seven assists in a Dec. 1 win over Casa Grande-Petaluma.

  • Curtis Grant, Clayton Valley football -- The senior made plays on both sides of the ball to help the Eagles beat Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park 35-7 on Nov. 30 for the NCS Division II title. He had an interception and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass.
