Broncos topple Eagles

  • The Northgate High boys soccer team earned its sixth win of the season, defeating Clayton Valley 4-1 in a Dec. 21 Diablo Valley Athletic League contest. Brandon Bolender led the Broncos with two goals. The Broncos have a 6-1-3 overall record and 1-1-1 DVAL mark.

    Warriors on a roll

  • The Ygnacio Valley High boys soccer team is off to a strong start, winning seven of its first 10 games. Two others resulted in ties, including a 1-1 result against Pittsburg on Dec. 22. Jonathan Ayala had three totals goals during the week of Dec. 17 as the Warriors earned a pair of DVAL wins over Clayton Valley and Mt. Diablo.

    Falcons are surging

  • The College Park High boys soccer team continues to play well. The Falcons wrapped up an unbeaten week in DVAL play by tying Northgate 0-0 on Dec. 18 then beating Berean Christian 4-1 two days later. Enri Refunjol had five steals against Northgate and scored on a header in the win over the Eagles.

  • The Miramonte High girls basketball team completed a strong run at the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions with a second place finish in Division G. The Matadors beat Thunder Ridge of Colorado and Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas before falling to Windward-Los Angeles in thte title game 68-43 on Dec. 22. Megan Reid had nine points, seven steals, seven rebounds and four assists in the Matadors' impressive 59-53 semifinal win over Bishop Gorman.

  • De La Salle at Nautical Cup, boys soccer, Dec. 27, time TBA -- The Spartans will put their undefeated record to the test in this San Diego tournament.

  • West Coast Jamboree, girls basketball, Dec. 27-31, all day -- One of the biggest girls basketball tournaments in the country returns for another year. The most prestigious division, the Platinum, will be played at Deer Valley HS.

  • Diablo Valley at San Jose City tournament, women's basketball, Dec. 28-30, times TBA -- The Vikings get back to work after the Christmas holiday.

    Stars of the week

  • Jason Braden, Berean Christian boys basketball -- The junior scored 32 points, including a 15 of 16 effort from the free throw line, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell to San Rafael 65-64 in the second round of the Piedmont Invitational on Dec. 21.

  • Jonathan Ayala, Ygnacio Valley boys soccer -- The Warriors' leading scorer, Ayala tallied three goals during the week of Dec. 17 in a pair of wins and a tie.

  • April Frantz, Concord girls soccer -- Frantz scored both goals for her team in Concord's 2-2 tie with Berean Christian on Dec. 18.

  • Keanna Delos Santos, Miramonte girls basketball -- The freshman guard was the Matadors' leading scorer at the Nike Tournament of Champions Dec. 20-22.

  • Nate Ellis, Bentley boys basketball -- Ellis' 14 points and 10 rebounds helped the Phoenix beat St. Vincent-Petaluma 54-38 on Dec. 20 to improve to 8-0 overall.

  • Mark Helfich, Acalanes boys soccer -- The junior forward had two goals in the Don's 3-1 victory over Alhambra on Dec. 18.

  • Cory Lozow, Alhambra boys basketball -- The sophomore guard had 11 points, eight assists and two steals in the Bulldogs' 61-49 nonleague win over Richmond on Dec. 20.
