2013 Science Teaching Fellow: Melissa Meloy has been chosen by the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation as a member of its 2013 cohort of Teaching Fellows. With only 15 percent of applicants chosen, they represent some of the top talent in the nation. Melissa is the daughter of Mike and Cindy Meloy, of Livermore, and graduated from Livermore High School in 2007. She holds a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a master's degree in education from Stanford University. Next week, she will begin teaching chemistry at Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton.

Creek Clean Up Project. Zachary Fleckner, of Livermore, the son of Donna and Kurt Fleckner, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, which was presented in August. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 999, under the leadership of Scoutmaster Russ Greenlaw. For his Eagle project Zachary cleaned up a creek in the Springtown neighborhood of Livermore and built an owl box and bench for the golf course patrons on the creek and the community to enjoy.

Eagle Scout Awarded. Eric Ford Faulkner, of Troop 999, received his Eagle Scout award at his court of honor at the Livermore Odd Fellows Hall on Aug. 18. For his Eagle project, Eric built and filled two large planter boxes with topsoil and planted a commemorative tree at Granada High School. He accomplished this with the help of his parents and scout volunteers from his troop and with donated topsoil. Eric is the son of Audrey and Brian Faulkner, of Livermore, and a 2013 graduate of Granada High School.

Tree Planted. Neal Samuel Border, of Livermore, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout from Troop 999 at his Court of Honor on Aug. 18. For his Eagle project Neal chose to plant an apple tree, build three tables, six benches and a brick path between two of the tables for wheelchair access at the special-needs outdoor area at Granada Hight School. Neal is the son of Jacinta and Will Border, of Livermore, and a 2013 graduate of Granada High School. He will attend Las Positas College this fall.
