Granada drubs Monte Vista on homecoming

  • The Granada football team made its 50th homecoming night memorable on the field, notching a rare win over Monte Vista 41-9 on Oct. 11. Tyler Offill passed for 153 yards and ran for a score. The Matadors' balanced rushing game featured touchdown runs from Casey Soltis, Jason Silva and Jacob Shinnick. The Mats combined for 251 yards rushing. Aaron Andrews, Artemio Fennoy, Victor Mitchell, and Reese Backman bolster the Mats' stout defensive line, which has been playing with a "good motor," coach Tim Silva said.

    San Ramon Valley routs Amador

  • San Ramon Valley High quarterback Matt Winaker completed 10 of 12 passes for 170 yards as the Wolves bested visiting Amador Valley 56-28 on Oct. 11 in East Bay Athletic League football. Winaker wasted no time taking command, as he completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Christian Fuca on the third play of the game. The victory sets up another showdown this week for the Wolves (3-3, 2-0), who travel to Granada (4-2, 1-1) on Oct. 18. California (5-0, 3-1), which handed Foothill its first loss of the season 24-7 on Oct. 11, will travel to struggling Monte Vista on Oct. 18 as it tries to avenge last season's loss to the Mustangs.

    Monte Vista wins volleyball battle

  • The Monte Vista girls volleyball team flexed its muscle with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-12 win over Foothill in EBAL action on Oct. 10. The Mustangs' Lauren Utchen, a junior outside hitter, had eight kills, two aces, two blocks, 10 digs, and four assists, making 53 contacts of the ball with only two errors. Utchen had a big week overall, also with six kills, 11 digs, 23 service points and four aces against Amador Valley on Oct. 8. The Falcons and Wolves were looking to stay close behind unbeaten San Ramon Valley in action last week.

    Alhambra staves off Dougherty Valley

  • The Dougherty Valley football team dropped a 40-37 heartbreaker to Alhambra in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League on Oct. 11. Michael Pangelinan led the Wildcats with 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Julian Williams scored two touchdowns. The Wildcats (4-2, 1-1), who beat rival Dublin 34-27 in their DFAL opener on Oct. 4, had their three-game win streak snapped.

  • San Ramon Valley at Granada, football, Oct. 17, 7 p.m. -- Teams coming off impressive, high-scoring wins will meet in Livermore.

  • Chabot at Merced, football, Oct. 19, 1 p.m. -- The Gladiators (3-2), coming off wins over Diablo Valley and Cabrillo, will open defense of their Golden Gate Conference title.

  • Diablo Valley at Reedley, football, Oct. 19, 7 p.m. -- Riding a two-game winning streak, the Vikings (2-4) kick off the Mid-Empire Conference season against struggling Reedley (1-4).

  • Tyler Offill, Granada football -- Offill passed and ran for a score in the Matadors' win over Monte Vista.

  • Kimberly Liu, Amador Valley golf -- Liu continued her outstanding season with a 3-under 34 at Ruby Hill Golf Club, helping the Dons beat rival Foothill 199-215 on Oct. 10.

  • Matt Winaker, San Ramon Valley football -- Winaker, a dual threat at quarterback, was almost flawless in the Wolves' big win over Amador Valley on Oct. 11, going 10-for-12 passing for 170 yards.

  • Simi Hingano, California football -- The junior ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, helping the run-oriented Grizzlies win their showdown against Foothill 24-7 on Oct. 11.

  • Marcus de la Pena, San Ramon Valley football -- He ran for a game-high 135 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Wolves rout Amador Valley 58-26.
